Occurs to me that we've never had one of these all encompassing threads. Threads for single movies that less people are likely to see always vanish quickly, so here's one that we can put all such movies in and just comment on what we've just seen, old or new. It might generate a bit more sustained movie discussion outside of sci-fi/fantasy genre stuff. For instance, I saw The Iron Giant for the first time last night. I though, despite it's age, that it was very good and sufficiently intelligent. I would recommend it. 7/10 In contrast, I also watched 3 Days to Kill with Kevin Costner, which was one of the most bizarre movies I've ever seen. Absurdly unbelievable, a supposed family father/daughter drama one minute, spy actioner the next, but neither side really gets going. Costner really needs to be picky about his scripts if he's hope to "do a Neeson". 4/10 Take it away folks...
A Million Ways to Die in the West, not as good as Ted though. It had some pretty funny moment, but overall I'd have to give it a 7.5/10. There were some funny parts, and 2-3 laugh out loud parts. I actually found one of the subplots to be funnier than the main plot of the movie. There's a musical scene which is pretty funny and also a dream scene that's pretty funny, especially because of the sheep. Overall it could have been funnier, but there was one scene that really stuck out and stole the movie.
Miami Connection. One of the best "worst" movies ever made - my son showed it to me. My eyes are still burning! Several ninja-fighting musicians never...ever.... have a shirt on - and are often draped only in a towel, not unlike the McPoyle family from Sunny In Philadelphia This movie has it all! 40 year old college students, Miami Vice rip-off music, inept ninjas, 80's style multi-racial street gangs with that one guy with a mohawk and that one guy with sleeves ripped off his shirt, and plot lines that come and go with "we just ran out of money" pathetic resolutions. The trailer doesn't BEGIN to match the intensity of this film! http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/miami_connection_2011/
I just watched Eyes of the Mothman, a sort-of documentary about the Mothman seen in and around Point Pleasant, West Virginia in 1966 and 67. It was fairly in-depth and touched on a lot of the backstory that normally no-one hears about. Meh. It was okay as far as such things go.
Unreal. Mind you, some of the crudity you describe, such as your quoted line, seems to be going a bit too far. I quite like McFarlane in the context of his fanboy style for the Eighties, but I get the impression here that he thought he was making a Blazing Saddles, but actually made what is essentially a total gross out movie. But then I guess I should've seen that coming when you consider some of the scenes in Ted.
I saw the lego movie last night. It has 96% on rotten tomatoes. Best grossing movie of the year, so far. I give it a 3/10.
I don't get the widespread acclaim. It wasn't very funny. It wasn't subversive. It was just constant childish action.
I thought it was a bit better than that, but I do wonder what the fuss is about. It's animated in a the style of stop motion (even though it's actually CGI). Maybe people thought that its was actually stop motion? I would certainly hope that it wasn't the vomit worthily obvious morality message we were treated to bu Will Ferrel and the brat towards the end.
Pacific Rim (finally got around to this one the other day) 6/10 Cool robots, boring, boring, boring people. And a plot line any semi-literate junior high schooler could come up with.
One of the best and most delightful animated movies to come out in years. I feel sorry that you have no soul.
I keep ratings of every one I see on IMDb. Last one was Goodbye Solo, which got 7/10. Other recent ratings: Rush 7/10 22 Jump Street 4/10 Dial M for Murder 7/10 Edge of Tomorrow 6/10 Before Midnight 7/10 X-Men: Days of Future Past 6/10 Calvary 7/10 To the Wonder 4/10 Noah 6/10 Devil 5/10 Labor Day 6/10 Lone Survivor 5/10
Saw Maleneficent last weekend. I always found Sleeping Beauty to be the most boring of the Disney Princess flicks and I guess tptb at Disney agreed. Hence this movie. It fills in one of the things in the originsl movie about why Mally was so peeved to be looked over for Aurora's christening The guy that played King Stephan was a stand out performance, but otherwise I'm pretty eh about it.
I just watched this movie on Netflix I'd never heard of before, "The Last Days on Mars". Has Liev Schrieber and Olivia Williams about a bunch of astronauts literally finishing their six months on Mars and ready to head back to earth when a mutant virus starts turning the crew into fast zombies. Pretty good production values and I like Schrieber in most everything he's in. Personally, I liked the movie up until the zombies appeared, then it turns into a straight horror movie. I would have preferred something more sci-fi and interesting. Too many stupid monsters on Mars movies, someone needs to make a more intelligent Mars movie.
If you mined all the world's gold and gave it to me I would still have to think hard about going to this movie. Actually..... most of the movies currently playing!
Worse. He is manipulated by the Diesels at the Dieselworks and they hold Thomas hostage while they seize and hold the Steamworks.
Edge of Tomorrow. I give it an 8/10. Good acting, plot handled well, even some unexpected bits of humor.
Transformers: Age of Extinction 0/10 Garbage. Just like all the other live action TF movies. I only went to see it because someone else paid for my ticket...
I watched this last night, it wasn't that bad. Not a great movie, but overall it was fairly watchable. One thing though, who ever they contracted their helmets to, built them some cheap helmets. You would think they would hole up better to impacts.
