I see your Been Reilly and raise you Miles Morals, who managed to slip into the Spiderman role in story unique to him.

But fandom racism, while more vocal these days, has always been around. I remember a story involving an interracial couple on the Young and the Restless getting scuttled 20 years ago because the actors involved received death threats over the story. Which, even aside from the racism angle is just insane considering one of the most iconic soap pairings began as date rape, but a wealthy black guy dating a white heiress? Nevar!!!

    :marathon:

So yeah, fantards can miss me with "content integrity" shit. It doesn't fly for shippers calling each other pedos on Tumblr and it won't fly here.

I agree. Instead of changing characters that have been established for 50 plus years, why not create new characters? I doubt few besides hardcore comic nerds had heard of black panther before the movie came out and look at what a hit it is. Same with Guardians of the Galaxy.

For comics pop the new characters in popular established comics and see which ones the audience likes. Then you can start a new line with them. It was done numerous times in the past and it would work again. If the characters are well written and engaging people will like it . Don't tell me that new characters can't be created because thats a total cop out and only shows lack of creativity and lazyness.

And to be blunt what Marvel did was a fucking insult to all minorities and LGBT.

How did anyone think these characters would not disappear as they are now doing?

These characters should have been their own characters with their own back stories.

Riri Williams should have been college aged and came up with her own power armor system. She could be a rival to Tony Stark.

Thor? I covered this in another thread but there is another Viking God she could have been: Freya. Goddess of sex, battle, and pleasure. There are three animals associated with her. Two cats who pull her chariot showing the beauty and comfort. The Battle Swine, known for it's savage and cunning nature. The Mare, unbridled sexuality, magic, and associated with night. To "ride the night-mare" was to have bad dreams. What the hell is wrong with that?

Make new characters. Let them stand on their own.

Oh and Marvel fucked up changing all the comics as all the movies where coming out.

Isn’t that exactly what they did? The “hero” character is just a persona, an archetype. The tension between the mask and the person who wears it is a central theme of all superhero stories. Why not expand the possibilities by exploring how different people might handle that role?

For someone who claims to be a comic fan, you seem to lack an awareness for common tropes in comics. Replacing legacy heroes is a fairly common thing.

Tony Stark has given up the mantle a few times, most notably giving it to James Rhodes. Even Dr Doom became Iron Man after Secret War.

Thor being replaced happens a lot. There’s Beta Ray Bill, Eric Masterson and some guy in the future.

Captain America becoming a Nazi is due to reality being warped. Good Steve Rogers later shows up and beats the shit out of him and is currently trying to save his legacy. All of his sidekicks have replaced him at some point, Falcon doing so because the Super Soldier serum was removed from his body, turning him old and not because he’s a Nazi.

You know for someone who claims to love comics, you really don’t know a lot about them. It’s like you heard something but someone else who heard something and took it as fact.

I don’t get why having black male fantasy figures is so awful. It’s not like anyone here has anything in common with Captain America physically. I like Spider-Man. I’m not male, have spider powers or get menaced by animal themed villains. But it entertains me. I love Peter as a character, but I also love Miles because it’s a different take on Spidey. I can still buy Peter comics, I can even get comics where Peter is still married to Mary Jane, they have a daughter and all three fight crime together.

That’s why I really don’t get why people even complain. If you liked Odinson as Thor, he still has his own comic. Wolverine is dead, but death is meaningless in comics and Marvel has already began publishing his return. But before we had Old Man Logan, who is just Wolverine if he were played by Clint Eastwood. Tony Stark as Iron Man is still around. I think he’s an AI now and he’s in a coma or dead. But he’ll be back before too long. It’s a weird story arc. There was another where Doc Ock replaced Peter by taking over his body. Comics are fucking weird, really any narrative that spans decades is going to get weird a few times because there are only so many ways a dude in spandex can beat up bad guys.

They do that all time. Anyone aware of comics knows that. They even made a movie about one, Black Panther.

These arguments rival the ones going on in the music world right now with KISS who have tried replacing their characters with new guys and fans aren't buying it. Peter Criss will forever be the Catman and Ace Frehely will always be the Spaceman. No matter who you put in the makeup and costumes, you'll NEVER top the originals in the fans eyes. Best to create new characters and let them be themselves.

The question I keep asking in my head is "why now??".
    Why this butt-puckered traditionalism now??
When the medium has never been that??

Even the Kiss example fails, because they've swapped characters in the band out before.

How about She-Hulk, and Spider-Woman, and Carol Danvers Captain Marvel?
Where's the ass bleeding over them?
Oh, right, you grew up with them.
    Nostalgia grandfathers them in.

Actually the SJW's wrecked Carol Danvers. Especially in the art department.

The "man" on the right is Carol Danvers.

So what. I could point out new characters, but they’re “SJW crap that doesn’t sell well” except when they are popular and sell well. So the goal posts are moved again so morons can claim there are no popular minority characters. Miles Morales is getting his own movie. Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur are getting an animated show. The Runaways have a successful Hulu series. But none of that is good enough because they aren’t as successful as Superman and Batman, who are now ironically failing to bring in movie fans and the only successful DC films are about minority characters like Wonder Woman and Harley Quinn. But let’s ignore that to protect the feelings of white men.

Black Panther is Marvel’s second biggest opening after the first Avengers, but that doesn’t count either. White men need to be coddled some more.

    Wonder Woman - good movie.

Harley Quinn - Suicide Squad was terrible.

Neither are minorities. Two white woman.

Batman and Superman? The current versions are blah. But the isn't on the characters. That's on DC and Hollywood being colossal fuckups and not getting their shit together.

Yes, it is. But I've never seen the entire line-up change, and for the changes to be, ostensibly, permanent.
Again, these were never intended to be lasting changes. There's a difference to the reader between wondering how Tony Stark's going to get his suit back from the bad guy, and wondering if Tony Stark will ever be Iron Man again.
    I know plenty.

And you either don't understand what Marvel was trying to do or you're just trying to play it off as if the wholesale change to the Marvel line was just some temporary plot twist. It wasn't. It was intended to be permanent.

I think there's something left unstated when people say comics publishers should create new minority characters instead of changing legacy characters. New characters can be safely ignored by people who think any diversity in comics is automatically an example of tokenism.

What makes you think they’re permanent? Steve Rogers is good and Captain America again. Odinson is going to be Thor again. Logan has come back to life and will be Wolverine again. Peter never stopped being Spider-Man. Bruce Banner is coming back and will be the Hulk again. Just like all those times before.

Pretty soon since he recently came back. I actually think the “trend” of replacing legacy characters is a marketing tool. They create new characters to sell and interest is stirred up along with news which is free marketing. Later, when a new movie is coming out, they bring back the original. That way when someone picks up a comic after seeing the movie, they see the legacy character. But also might see the new ones and they gain more readers. Also since it has been lost in the conversation, Riri Williams actually goes by Ironheart and not Iron Man. Dr Doom was Iron Man, but Tony seems to be back now and will take it over again.

Sure it was. Just like when Superman died, Batman broke his back, the X-Men team got replaced entirely, Superman split into two energy beings, Doc Ock took over Spider-Man’s body, Hulk being shot into space and Captain America becoming a Nazi.

Using a black pencil to retcon Nick Fury (or any of the myriad lessers like Electro) is about a prima facie racist as one can get, and it's kinda amusing that progressives can't see that or can be bought off so cheaply. But in a world where leftist bullshit propaganda media celebrates the No Korean minister of propaganda (what, cause she's photogenic?) while ripping on the US Veep, the left celebrating whitewashing characters black really scores pretty low on the ironic amusement scale.

The original Nick Fury is white. You’re thinking off the Ultimate universe Fury, who is black and designed to resemble Sam Jackson. Jackson was fine with it and joked that he’d like to play him in any eventual movie, which is why he later played him which has been one of the better casting decisions in a very well cast franchise. There’s also Nick Fury Jr who is also black and friends with Agent Coulson who was introduced to the comics recently. The original Fury is now the Watcher since Uatu is dead.
