https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cn.../chicago-officer-involved-shooting/index.html So police officers identified a young black man who they say showed the signs of carrying a concealed handgun. When they approached him he became combative and started push and shoving the officers before reaching for his concealed handgun... But another officer shot him with the gun in his hand. That sounds like as clear a good shoot as can be. Yet now we have "protesters" becoming violent, throwing bottles and hitting people, basically trying to start a riot in the name of Black Lives Matter. So what gives? The cops seem to be trying real hard to stop the protests from becoming a riot and looting type situation.
Based on the article, it certainly sounds like the shooting was justified... maybe if American cops didn't kill so many unarmed blacks for no reason, people would be more willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
The narrative that heavily over-the-odds numbers of unarmed black men are killed by police is actually 100% false. An unarmed black man is more likely to be killed by a lightning strike than a cop. The narrative is being pushed by certain interested parties who wish to keep working class America divided and conquered, and keeping division and animosity going along racial lines by the fostering of false oppression narratives, is as good a way as any to achieve that.
"showed the signs". Is that like "fitting the description" or "probable cause"? By approached, do they mean a pair of officers discreetly engaged him for questioning or did a half dozen or more suddenly surround him and begin peppering him with questions to which there is no right answer? If the cops want to prevent riots and protests, their doctrine of meeting interactions with the public with overwhelming intimidation and force might need some revisions. Post Philando Castile, why wouldn't a Black man carrying a gun/exercising his 2A rights attempt to evade and resist them? For a supposed libertarian, you sure seem to support the state initiating violence against citizens in the pursuit of incarcerating them. This incident should have been as simple as: Cop-we believe you are carrying a concealed firearm. Guy-Not that it is any of your business, but I'm not. Have a nice day.
Saw this coming a mile away. If it wasn't 14th Doc it would be someone else. Cops have shot unarmed blacks before for no reason, so you have to assume all cops are likely to do the same. Well that's about as good a reason for a protest as any......take it to the streets! And yes I have mentioned that the odds of a black getting shot by a cop are a tiny fraction of the odds of getting shot by another black, but blacks shooting blacks is so fucking common that it generally only makes the local news. Granted, whites shoot whites too, but then again most homicides occur among people of the same race. I offered a possible solution but it's unconstitutional - no more white cops in cities with large black populations. Another option is disarming white cops - but give them extra combat/hazardous duty pay in all fairness. I mentioned before one reason I would never be a cop is I'd get fired for letting blacks get away with everything. I'd be like Hogan's Heroes Sergeant Shultz - "I see nothing, I hear nothing.......nothing!" when I would see blacks committing a crime.
Some witnesses have said the man was shot in the back while running away. There is bodycam video, so the truth should be known eventually. https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/chicago-police-man-shot-south-shore/amp/
Not necessarily true. A person can turn at virtually the same moment the officers finger squeezes down on the trigger.
That would be very unlikely to help anything. black and other minority police officers would be seen as serving a white power structure anyway and thus white interests.
Not necessarily illegal. Many thought problems ask, "Is he retreating (In which case he is no longer an immediate threat to you) or is he attempting to move to cover (In which case he is still an immediate threat to you)?" You have 1/4 of 1 second to make a decision. Go. Excellent.
Yeah, but there usually are claims about guns being books or strong arm robbers were walking to church at 2am. Body cam footage really does work and exposes most of those claims as lies.
I am neither an authoritarian nor a libertarian. I imagine your reasoning is something along the lines of I want gun control ergo I must be an authoritarian.
HA! The plot thickens. Good thing they didn't pull the classic "the body camera wasn't turned on" approach. IMO if your police force issues body cameras not having them on when should gets you fired on the spot.
Yes. In a city like Chicago that is hostile to guns. If you know what you're looking for and if the other person is sloppy you can see whose probably carrying a gun concealed. Because it's stupid? It's a good way to get arrested or even shot during such a confrontation. I don't know if this shooting is justified or not but lets for sake of argument say he was legal to carry a firearm. So the police approach him, he runs, and while running he grabs his weapon. Not to shoot the cops but to prevent it from falling out of his pants as the gun is starting to come out. At that point, the cops have no idea he's a CCW holder and they have no idea that he doesn't intend to shoot only to keep the weapon secure on his body. As the cop giving chase what are you most likely going to do upon seeing that? (It's been reported that he didn't have a CCW) It doesn't work like that in non-gun friendly cities like Chicago. It should but it doesn't.
I'd also like to add that he may be trying to shoot you while running away from you. Of course, we need the video to see exactly what happened.
I can read this two ways: 1. Why are the police bothering someone for exercising their 2nd Amendment rights? 2. Why did the man become combative with police? Pick who you'd like me to blame here and I'll proceed.
I can see why they wanted to stop him. With a full-size gun and holster and full-size magazines on his belt while wearing a T-shirt he's probably printing like crazy or they saw the bottom of the barrel while it was in the holster. Especially given his belt sucks and his pants were sagging. Also, it looks like he's trying to take it out but since he has a bad belt he's having difficulty. At :17-:19 he's facing the officers while trying to get his gun out. Yeah it's pretty justified.
I'm actually in Chicago for a conference. Had the most amazing time at Wrigley Field last night. Def Leppard/Journey/Pretenders. Hard to get ahem, fired up about another Chicago shooting.
Looking at the video, it's evident that the man is resisting and it sure looks like he's grabbing for the gun when he's shot.
Yeah, this looks like he was definitely grabbing for a gun. I don't think any shooting is justified under any circumstance, but if I did, this would qualify as justified.
yup... at 0:11 he reached for it before stumbling into the road. I'd like to know why the blonde cop and the other grabbed him before then as he was producing ID for the officer who'd approached him first. That first reach towards it could arguably have been instinctive (she did come at him from behind), but that he reached for it again is Darwinable.
blame TRUMP! Proceed down either path and you will be guided to success by experienced Trump haters. You literally can't lose this game!
