Later Day Saints broke off from the Mormons back in the day and more cult like. Their current leader is in jail. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_Jeffs There’s a good documentary on one of the streaming services, I don’t remember which one, that dives into a number of cults, including the one with Allison Mack. Mormonism is Star Trek, Latter Day Saints are the rabid fanboys.
While they are the same thing, I found this while scrounging to see if there really is a difference: https://www.deseretnews.com/article/700123737/LDS-or-Mormon-It-depends.html
No. Both groups call themselves LDS. The group you are talking about adds an F for Fundamentalist, FLDS.
The Jehovah's Witnesses are going as far as saying that their members should actively block police investigations into sexual abuse by church leaders.
Anyway, fuck the Catholic Church and fuck anyone still in it. You're no better than antivaxxers in my book.
Yep. A book worth reading on the subject is Escape by Carolyn Jessop. You might recognize the name as her husband (she was his 7th I believe, and 40 years her senior) Merril Jessop took over the church when Warren Jeffs went to jail. It's very personal story and EXTREMELY fucked up. Like this young girl, disgusted by her husband, but forced to try and sexually appease him in order to get laundry and kitchen slots* so she can cloth and feed her children. *one kitchen and laundry room for essentially 7 families. All 24h of the day are allocated. The higher your standing, the more and better slots you got.
Well, if Catholics cared about consent, they wouldn't have this mess on their hands. Besides, we're talkin' about THESE folk:
You do know that the board has a former LDS member here, right? When talking about Mormonism and their fuckeries, better make sure you have your facts straight, lest those who have some working knowlegde correct you (as already happened in this thread) and that ex-Mormon say, "What the fuck you talking about, ese?" Ahem. What the fuck you talking about, homes?
"They are moving that way. There are already married priests, it is just that married men can’t become priests and priests can’t marry." ummm.......so......okay.....I think my mind just imploded, give me a second here: can somebody solve this riddle for me?
this is what happens when you fight evolution! Sorry, sex isn't a sin! Actually "sin" isn't even a sin because there is no such thing. Anyway humans have been fucking before we were even humans. Higher life forms have evolved while dealing with these four drives: 1. food 2. sex 3. avoidance of pain 4. conservation of energy These four things are requirements, but in modern society they can be traps too. Regardless these four drives have to be dealt with & confronted & even manipulated at times. Otherwise we end up fat, lazy, drug addicted sex fiends. Respect these four drives, own these four drives, (but don't be owned by them) and life is not so as it seems. And I totally agree that religion needs to be kept out of mental health concerns (especially clinically diagnosed severe mental illness!). If you want to pray about your loved ones getting help from the trained professionals, go for it. Just don't let religion be the only help they get! Now take my wife.....please! Sorry, I couldn't help it. Anyway right now my wife can't tell reality from delusion. She needs help from people (including myself) with their heads focused on facts, reality, hard work, research, maybe even calm reflection on the situation when facing a dead end on a diagnosis. Not fairy tales or false hope or even unwarranted guilt if it applies. Just my 2 cents!
Yeah I'm worried about the Nazi threat and supporting the Catholic church. No, wait... Reverse that. What is it with conservatives where everything is binary? Who the hell is supporting the catholic church and worried about the nazi threat? Is this a thing?
Dispensation is left. For instance, priests in the Soviet Union would often marry to camouflage their religious role. But those marriages are recognized by Rome. This gives Catholicism a set of married priests despite the basic rules.
I have known some people who would be like that. There are a lot of people who turn a blind eye to the Catholic church and it's problems.
I'll grant that many turn a blind eye to the catholic church and worry about lost kittens, climate change, or the falling Turkish lira. What does the one have to do with the others?
Apostolic Succession is the basis of Church Authority. Every Catholic Bishop has been appointed by a bishop that was appointed by a bishop that was appointed by a bishop.... that was appointed by an apostle that was given authority by Jesus. This is the basis of all church authority, including the authority to ordination of priests. However, the Roman Catholic Church doesn’t have a monopoly on these bishops. There are other churches, currently out of communion with Rome with bishops that have the authority to ordinate priests in the name of Jesus, namely the Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran and Episcopal churches. All of which allow priests to marry. If one of these married priests come into communion with Rome (converts) they are now Roman Catholic priests. They are also still married. 10 years back or so, when the Episcopal Church was grappling with the issue of homosexuality, the Roman Catholic Church streamlined the process and was really pushing it as an alternative for Episcopal priests and bishops to ‘rejoin’ the Roman Catholic Church.
Organized religion, and especially Catholicism, is the biggest scam perpetrated on mankind. It's evil, corrupt, and needs to be destroyed.
I'm talking about the LDS being a cult and this series on A&E. https://www.aetv.com/shows/cults-and-extreme-belief
It was badly worded. Here's a clarification. 1. True, there are currently married priests in the Roman Catholic Church (RCC). 2. True, a man who is a Roman Catholic priest and not married may not get married and remain a priest. 3. True a man who is married and not a priest already may not become a Roman Catholic priest. HOWEVER, a man who is a priest in another tradition (Church of England, Eastern Orthodox, etc.) and happens to be married is allowed to become an RCC priest after conversion and stay married. That's how Item #1 above can be true.
*sigh* The "LDS Church" and "Mormons" and "Mormonism" are all the same thing. Whether the mainstream LDS Church / Mormonism is a cult, I leave that the impartial reader to judge. But super whackos like the FLDS are not the same thing as the LDS.
Oh dear Lord. It was a forgivable mistake, but clearly a mistake. Please don't dig yourself in deeper out of pure stubbornness. Yes, the Mormons, aka the LDS, might be considered a cult depending on your definition of 'cult'. But the LDS did not 'break away from' the Mormons; they are the Mormons. The group that you are thinking of as breaking away are not the LDS, but the FLDS.
