Definitely. Others have pointed out that the shot we've had of the Doctor working at a bench with goggles and apron strongly appear to be her building this sonic, rather than having the TARDIS pop out a new one for her. If so, then she could be making do with a mishmash of whatever alien tech is available (i.e. repurposing a weapon or device from whatever aliens she encounters in the first story). Or maybe she even IS using a Dooku-style lightsaber prop toy as the casing... THAT would blow the hardcore fans' heads!
If that introduction trailer from last year is canon, she's going to spend awhile separated from the Tardis, and have to MacGuyver her way back into contact with it.
I'm here for Jodi's Doctor but the official trailers have struck me as lightweight, more style than substance.
It was implied by Jodie yesterday that the TARDIS was rejecting her. I really hope we're not getting a "TARDIS doesn't like me 'cause woman" go around. The gender change should be played as matter of fact as possible IMO.
I can't take credit for this one (found it in the transcript), but in "Face the Raven" - poster of a flux capacitor in aurebesh script: Also mention of a cloaking device.
True, but they aren't the Doctor. If the TARDIS is indeed telepathically linked to the Doctor, they MIGHT go the route of the "marriage" needing some adjustment. But I doubt it - the old "girl" is actually an 11th dimensional lifeform that exists across all of Time and Space, I doubt an extra X chromosome (or however Time Lords/Ladies code differently if they even do) is gonna bother her. I suspect it's more the TARDIS "knowing where the Doctor needs to be" again and kicking her out so she meets some new mates and stops moping like Twelve. She can't be missing the TARDIS for THAT long as we've only got 10 episodes this series and no two-parters. And Chibbers has said he wants this series to be a new jumping on point for new viewers, so you wanna get the elements re-established fairly fast.
"The Return of Doctor Mysterio": Blatant Lois & Clark ripoff + Doctor + Baby. "Oxygen": Doctor's voice-over: "Space, the final frontier." Seriously? Still, I like that the message is "Space can kill you." No sugar-coating. “The Lie of the Land”: Nardole uses a “Taronian neck pinch” to disable someone about to shoot the Doctor. Okay, this is getting silly...
Well the Superman ripoff was intentional as Moff always loved superhero comics and wanted to do an homage.
Well, Dr. Who's been around about as long as Trek, and one of the classic Doctors had a pressure point move too "Venutian kung-fu", or something like that. And Gary Seven's "servo", is totally a sonic screwdriver ripoff. Who and Trek have always had a porous border.
There's always a slight element of "what can I put in that will really get Lawrence Miles and Ian Levine pissed off" to Moff's scripts. Trek nods may be part of this. Remember, it was Moffat's two-parter The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances that had Rose asking Nine to "give me some Spock!" and actually behave like an alien with advanced tech.
Okay, wrapping up: “The Empress of Mars”: “I have a bad feeling about this.” Nothing I noticed in “World Enough and Time” except that the title is from a novel by Robert Penn Warren. “The Doctor Falls”: “There are always possibilities”; “The ultimate Apple upgrade.” Had some "what-if" questions about S8-10, but I'll save those for a separate thread. We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming. Haven't watched the new trailers; will have some thoughts once I do. Not crazy about the idea of three companions, but I'll try to keep an open mind.
Andrew Marvell got there first. Still one of the twenty or so best English poems. To His Coy Mistress Had we but world enough and time, This coyness, lady, were no crime. We would sit down, and think which way To walk, and pass our long love’s day. Thou by the Indian Ganges’ side Shouldst rubies find; I by the tide Of Humber would complain. I would Love you ten years before the flood, And you should, if you please, refuse Till the conversion of the Jews. My vegetable love should grow Vaster than empires and more slow; An hundred years should go to praise Thine eyes, and on thy forehead gaze; Two hundred to adore each breast, But thirty thousand to the rest; An age at least to every part, And the last age should show your heart. For, lady, you deserve this state, Nor would I love at lower rate. But at my back I always hear Time’s wingèd chariot hurrying near; And yonder all before us lie Deserts of vast eternity. Thy beauty shall no more be found; Nor, in thy marble vault, shall sound My echoing song; then worms shall try That long-preserved virginity, And your quaint honour turn to dust, And into ashes all my lust; The grave’s a fine and private place, But none, I think, do there embrace. Now therefore, while the youthful hue Sits on thy skin like morning dew, And while thy willing soul transpires At every pore with instant fires, Now let us sport us while we may, And now, like amorous birds of prey, Rather at once our time devour Than languish in his slow-chapped power. Let us roll all our strength and all Our sweetness up into one ball, And tear our pleasures with rough strife Through the iron gates of life: Thus, though we cannot make our sun Stand still, yet we will make him run.
You'd think as a literature major I'd remember that. It didn't seem to fit the Penn Warren novel, and something was nagging at the back of my brain, but I couldn't recall it. My mind is a compost heap of useful/useless information, and I can't always separate the two. Thank you!
Oo, oo, one more: "Time Heist": DOCTOR: Shut up. Just shut up, shut up, shut up, shutetty up up up. Variation on Malcolm Tucker's "Fuckedy-bye."
Leaked pic of new TARDIS interior: Interesting new take on the roundels. First time, I think, that the entrance has had more than one of the exterior dimensions, too.
Seems to have been burned down to the wall studs, so to speak, in the descent to Earth. I hope that doesn't mean 13 will go all Martha Stewart in the redecorating.
The premiere date has finally been revealed! October 7th. A month and two days from now. https://www.cbr.com/doctor-who-season-11-premiere-date/
BBC doesn't think it's going to do well? You think they will move it back to Saturday if it does well?
Strong first impression. Jodie's nailed it, companions are most realistic since the RTD era. New theme sounds good from what we got at the end. Cinematography is excellent. Alien was a bit naff, but this wasn't about the alien except as a means to bring the team together.
