Why's everything a slap in the face?
    Jesus Christ, lighten up.
And stop watching all these angry guys on Youtube.
    They do it for attention.
If someone really had that much of a chip on their shoulder 24/7, they'd be hospitalized for a bleeding ulcer.

    I hated The Last Jedi.

But, on the other hand, I kinda loved it, too.

Subversion does that to me. Same way with No Country for Old Men.

Subversion can be done well, and can be enjoyable. Subversion for the sake of subversion is just shy of the director just showing up at times and flinging his feces at the camera.

Subversion undercuts the viewer's expectation. Done well, it can pleasantly surprise us because we're all so well versed in moviemaking that we usually sorta know what's coming next.

I yummed up every bit of the subversion.
As a longtime reader of the Star Wars EU, I was sick to death of the repeating loops of the Campbellian mono-myth.
It's not something causal viewers of the films were sick to death of, so I can vaguely understand where their displeasure of not getting the fan-fic they wanted came from, but I've read that fan fic, repeatedly, and I want it as burned to the ground as Snoke's curtains.
    I want the wheel broken.
    If JJ re-establishes the loop, I'll be...annoyed.

Look, if you guys want the happy-fun-time everyone re-unites version of the sequels, go read The Thrawn Trilogy.
    Then Dark Empire.
    Then Jedi Academy.
    Then Hand Of Thrawn.

    That's what you want.
    It's right there for you.

    I don't want it anymore.
    I've been there.
I went on that journey in the 90's.
It's the 10's, I want something else now.

I don't really have any problems with the story in TLJ, just the length and pacing. Tighten it up by 15 minutes or so and it would be much more enjoyable. As-is, it's a slog.

The whole Canto Bight sequence drags for me, and the absolute ridiculousness of Finn and Rose stumbling onto another codebreaker--yeah, yeah, don't bullshit that away by resorting to the Force--makes it doubly painful for me.

It doesn't help that that it takes place during a loooooong, mostly uninteresting starship chase, and that I'm mostly annoyed by Rose's whole participation in the film.

But trim that shit up, and the movie would be fine.

The best example ever of why you make cuts to movies is the extended edition of That Thing You Do! It turns an enjoyable, well-paced story into an abomination.

If an element doesn't further the story, or causes the story to bog down, you've got to get rid of it. In my work, we call that "killing your babies". :bergman:

WTF was that movie De Niro directed with Dicaprio and Angelina Jolie about the CIA? Holy shit did that thing need some serious editing.

Apparently The Good Shepherd. I've never seen it, though.

The Redux version of Apocalypse Now is another great example of more not necessary being better. While it was kind of cool to see a little more of that world (including nekkid Playmates :tits:) none of the added elements helped further the story and adds 50 minutes to an already long movie. Plus, to me, the bit with stealing Kilgore's surfboard adds a comic element that feels out of place in an otherwise dark movie.

Love that expression. It perfectly sums up an attitude the editor must have: no matter how well-acted or well-shot or poignant or funny a scene may be, if it doesn't serve the story, it must be ruthlessly excised.

I always go back to one of the pieces of advice in Mark Twain's essay Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offenses: eschew surplusage.

I've seen so many versions of Apocalypse Now that I've forgotten what's theatrical, what's Redux, and what's Final Cut.

I got the 4K Final Cut last weekend and watched it. It has the French enclave scene and the Kilgore surfboard theft, but, alas, no Playboy bewbies (especially unfortunate since one of the bunnies is Colleen Camp who was particularly tasty way back when). Consolation prize: the French lady has pretty great bewbies.

Great movie, but it is overlong. I'm struck by how Harrison Ford is almost a teenager in his scene.

Only worth watching because it seriously makes the case that Keir Dullea has a painting of himself in his attic.

I think it's one of those things where we don't have quite the right format for what Coppola was trying to do. As a movie, it's a bit too long, but as a mini-series, it's not quite long enough.

Assuming that's the casino planet: I went into it expecting it to drag, but it didn't. Enough action and ideas for me.

It would have been ridiculous if he'd been another top-notch genius codebreaker, agreed. But he wasn't. He knew enough to be useful to get where he wanted and faked the rest, right? There could have been twenty or thirty of him running around that place.

Hayden as an Anakin force ghost is actually the only way I'll accept a Kylo redemption.

I don't see any plausible way out except him talking to "grandfather!", and Anakin telling him the dark side is bullshit, and Palpatine is a liar.

    He hates Luke.
    Rey hates him.
Leia has given up on him.
    He doesn't know Yoda.
    He doesn't know Obi-Wan.

    Who else is left?

Also, TROS is meant to tie all 9 together, so there's going to be some prequel element in there.
And it won't be a minor thing like Watto in a crowd scene.
