There are some gender swaps that work better than others. In the recent Voltron reboot, the short one Pidge was revealed to be a girl in the 3rd episode because she posed as a boy to infiltrate the Space Foce and get information on the disappearance of her brother. And it wasn't a thing that was a Huge Thing, it just was. And the voice actor came out as non-binary themself during the show's run, so that was a nice plus The writers got little else right for Pidge after that, but a solid B- for effort with that.
ever watched "Battle of the Planets"? Zoltar was pretty confusing back in 1979... but in retrospect mainly because the tried to skip over the transition aspect and say h was now his own sister. Still, 10 year old me just kinda shrugged and went back to getting a boner during the opening credits (my first panty shot!!!)
That show wasn't helped by the clumsy American editing. Too many of the original elements of the setting were chopped up or scrambled when Gachaman was turned into Battle of the Planets.
