I think we can all agree that Chauvin was guilty, but dancing on his grave isn’t exactly productive either. The rule of law and the judicial system prevailed. Sending someone to their doom is not necessary something that I take joy in, even if I think they’re guilty and deserve it. Take the W and move forward. IMO.

No. The reason people are "taking joy" in this and celebrating is because A) it's unusual that victims of police shootings get justice; B) even more unusual when the victim is black; C) most people are hoping/seeing this trial is as a stepping stone to actually changing systemic racism.

Devil's advocate. I've worked in jobs like that and most other shitty, entry-level gigs you can think of, and that gave me the opportunity to observe my co-workers. Everything "Amanda" said is probably true, but what is also true: after scrawling out a barely-literate, barely-legible job application and mumbling through a cream puff tee ball game of an interview, many show up late on their first fucking day, likely also stoned and/or hungover to boot. They must be painstakingly trained and constantly supervised for complex operations such as "wash a dish" and "flip a burger," and shamelessly drag their fucking feet while half-assing every single fucking task they are given. Are they at all concerned that their manners and personal conduct towards customers represents their employer? Ha! Do they give two shits that peoples' health is at stake while they pick their noses, scratch their asses and cough on the drink fountain as to get that refill some customer was waiting 20 goddamn minutes to receive, or lazily flopping that mop head a couple times in the general direction of the restrooms only after some shift manager had to tell them three fucking times to do it? Please! Does it register on what passes for their personal integrity when they try to serve 6 hour old fries and some burnt chicken fingers to a paying customer because it's near the end of their shift and they have a date? Sure. Do they give a flying fuck how disruptive of the whole operation it is for staff and customers alike when they can't be bothered reliably show up for their scheduled shifts? Hell no. But that same person will bitch and moan about how hard their job is and how badly they need a raise. And if any hard worker distinguishes themselves enough to advance, well they obviously did it unfairly. It's because they're white, or a pretty girl, or a kiss-ass, or knows the owner, or blah blah anything to avoid acknowledging the merits of reliable attendance and hard work. Then they quit, or get fired, or just stop showing up without bothering with so much as a phone call. Rack up enough of those 2 month stints and your resume starts to look unappealing, so then it's "Oh my gawd, mom, I tried all day to get a job, but nobody is hiring. It's not my fault. That's why I need you to pay my cell phone bill and my car payment this month. And I need you to watch my kids Friday night. I deserve a night out after all this stress."

If you want $15 an hour for an entry-level foodservice gig, you better show up with a solid job history and something resembling a decent work ethic. Which basically makes you a three-headed unicorn sliding down a rainbow made of platinum-plated goddamn fairy dust.

And those people suck and I hate working with them, but the industry needs to change, period. I don't need Gordon Ramsey type assholes yelling at me while I'm trying to do my job and I know what I'm doing. By doing that you're stressing me out and making it hard hard for me to concentrate, thus ensuring that something is going to go wrong. Talk to me with some decency and things will go a lot smoother. If the lazy fuck who drags his feet (I can't stand that shit) is a problem child, then tell them to pound sand and give the hard worker a raise. Then going forward, hire a person who doesn't do that shit. Often times the lazy fucks just get away with their laziness for some reason.

Oh, it's all about your feelings is it, princess? I should gently, lovingly coax you into doing the job you agreed to fucking do at a pace somewhere above glacial? Only after your delicate emotional state is placated will you acknowledge any responsibility to perform your duties? No. Shut the fuck up, get over yourself and GET THE GODDAMN FUCKING HELL TO WORK.

Apropos of Albert's rant, my brother (through no fault of his own) had a run of bad luck and wound up having to take a part-time retail gig to stay afloat. He's a few years younger than me, so not exactly a punk kid. Turns out that in retail they hire a bunch of no-loads as Albert describes and just by virtue of doing his fucking job my brother has been promoted to full time and assistant manager or some such. Just because, as a responsible grown up, he shows up on time and does what he's supposed to do.

Imagine that.

And I will pay you what you prove you are worth, not what you feel you deserve sight-unseen.

Not at all what I'm saying. I just want to be treated with decency and not yelled at like a dog. I work at a swift pace, thank you very much.

Anyone who feels that treating other people like human beings is a terrible imposition ... probably shouldn't be in management.

And anyone who defines "being treated like a human being" the same as "being doted on like mommy and daddy's special little champ" is not ready for employment in the grownup world.

Then you're the exception, rather than the rule. Because IME, places that offer shit-wages starting out don't pay better regardless of how one does. In fact, if you're too reliable and good at your job, you're more apt to get fucked by management. If you're the only one they can count on to show up and do a good job, they don't want to do anything other than just heap more work on you (for the same level of pay). Why? Because if they promote you, they're left scrambling trying to get somebody to do the job you were doing. So they leave you there, and since they only pay shit wages to begin with, the only people that they can find to hire are either folks so desperate for a job that they'll take anything they can get, or apathetic fucks who just need a job to get people off their back about not having one. The folks with skills and motivation will seek out higher-paying jobs because they know that they can't rely on any employer to recognize their worth and adequately compensate them once they've demonstrated their abilities. And if your choice is between a warehouse job that pays $15/hr and a customer service job that pays $10/hr, where you can be absolutely certain you'll have a Karen screaming in your face on a regular basis about some stupid bullshit, which are you going to opt for?

This is especially true on a line. You'd be surprised how many people can't make a medium-rare steak. It's super easy. If you can demonstrate that you're good on the grill, guess what you're doing from now on? It sucks because it gets to be repetitive and boring and you don't pick up any new skills unless someone is out or quits. Guess what happens when you only have a few specialized skills? You can't move up. You end up doing the same old shit over and over and you get a tiny raise every once in a while. Fortunately for me I've done pretty much everything on a line and have cross trained and have a pretty solid work history so I can negotiate for a higher wage, but some places won't budge on their pay and the places that do pay, people hold on to those jobs so you end up settling for the second best option. Add to that a fucking once in a century pandemic and shut downs and you're royally screwed because some people end up settling for less money so those jobs you might have gone for get scooped up so there you go, you stay on unemployment or wait until summer when everything is opened up fully.

I’ve got news for everyone here, but people paid 75 to 100k are just as lazy and just as incapable of trying to learn their job. Most are drunk or high at work. It’s got nothing to do with the rate of pay.

The fact that you view "not screaming at and berating people all the time," per TGOCH's post that you were replying to, as equivalent to "being doted on like mommy and daddy's special little champ" is very revealing.
