I have never once claimed to seek a utopia. I am in fact weary of repeating that I do not advocate for collective outcomes.

Yes, and I've pointed out in several ways why that's ignorant and foolish.
    Here's another.
To make a world that doesn't give a shit about collective outcomes, you have to convince other people to get on board, and they're going to very quickly figure out that that screws them the fuck over, and there goes your dumb little fantasy.
Whether you call that fantasy a utopia, a dystopia, or "weave me awone! :drama:" doesn't matter.

I say again, go be Grizzly Adams, stop asking everyone else to shoot themselves in the foot for you.

Libertarianism wasn't a beautiful thing that went wrong, it was a pyramid scam from the jump.
And you may ask "where did it fail?".
    The fucking pandemic.

Oh, and you deftly dodged the "should we just let people die?" question.
I'll just go ahead, and take the dodge as a "yes".

It's not a dodge, you tedious fucking assclown. It is me declining to repeat myself for the umpteenth goddamn time, just so you can make up something to reply to anyway. Whether you live or die is not up to me. I'm not "letting" it happen when it's not under my control and wasn't my responsibility in the first place.

    Bull-fucking-shit.
The world's too interconnected for that bullshit anymore.
The Wonderful Company that owns Pom Wonderful and all of America's pistachios has gobbled up all the water in California like the villains in "Tank Girl".
    They've caused droughts in California.
    They're scum.
If everyone just stopped eating pistachios and guzzling Pom Wonderful, they'd go out of business.
Oh, Fiji water and Clementine oranges are to be avoided too.
We have the superpower of our dollar-vote at the grocery store to shut down a literal fucking super villain.
Google around, there's shit you can boycott that would end fucking slavery, for chrissakes!
And all that before we get into voting, which you refuse to participate in.
But you do fuck all to talk anyone else out of it, and your big flapping mouth would sure as Hell convince someone as dumb as FF to vote fucking Republican.
So even there you're not fucking neutral.
Every action you take has a big ripple effect.
    You're not an island.
    Get over yourself.

There are programs that demonstrably save lives, that are paid for with your tax dollars.

If you had the power to eliminate those programs entirely by withholding the tiny fraction of their funding that comes out of your own pocket, you'd gladly do so.

How are you not openly in favour of letting people die to save a few cents every payday?

According to an episode of Seinfeld I once saw, "we live in a society."

Do you think that living in a society comes with any sort of default obligation to the rest of society, or any sort of social contract? The impression I get is that you do not, or that you do and you deeply resent the fact.

Then I'm apparently misunderstanding your argument. Are you suggesting we, as a society as a whole, should allow people who, through their own bad decisions or circumstances beyond their control, starve?

In other words have no society at all and let humanity die out.

UA would likely die if it weren't for all of the benefits he reaps by living in a society. But I guess he'd rather die because fReEdOm.

    Sad but possibly true.

Very few humans can survive in isolation, much less prosper.

That's because our big evolutionary advantage is the ability to work in groups.

Unfortunately, that is not a possibility. Our society, our existence in 2021, on planet Earth, our society is so intertwined and dependent on each other, that it would be impossible to separate each other from that society. An individual may choose to leave society and live alone Ted Kaczynski style, but to attempt to extricate an individual that doesn't want to be extricated is next to impossible.

I don't think so. If we continue to allow the 1% to make decision for society, this is a probably outcome. But, I don't think it's too late to stop movement in that direction. We will need to stop assclowns who have no idea what they're talking about (Lanz) from working against a better outcome, but ... nothing worth having is ever easy.

There was an idea floated some time ago, I forget by whom, that increasing population was good because it meant more brains thinking up more solutions to more problems. As it's turned out, the opposite is true. More people has meant more idiots acting in short-term self interest, consuming more resources with little thought to long-term consequences, and we are now starting to see the effects of that in terms of climate change and shortages.

I'm not that optimistic to be honest.

People talk about us killing the planet but I suspect the planet will be just hunky dory. It just won't have many humans left on it.

It is within the power of the human race to kill the planet - render it unsuitable for life. I don't think it will go that far, but I do think we've a K-T boundary level event coming up.

Oh I agree. The planet will shake us off if we continue at the rate we're going. But, that's my point. The 1% don't seem to care. They only care about how much money they can make today. We need to stop doing that. We need to stop letting them make decisions that will affect the rest of the human race.

We've got enough brains to solve all the problems.
It's just the ones causing the problems figured out all it takes is walls, passcodes, guns, and bribed stooges to keep the solutions from happening.

    There's always a 1%.

    I'm not sure that's avoidable.

Yet we're all shortsighted, that's in our nature too because we're not evolved to think in terms of centuries or millions of people. We think in terms of our little groups and the foreseeable.

In that regard I'm concerned about the effect climate change will have in the next hundred years or so, whilst my children are here to see it. If I raise them well enough hopefully they'll consider the next hundred after that.

Honestly I think right now that's the best we can hope for.

I love how Lanzman in his fatalism as much admits conservative greed is destroying the planet, and yet keeps handing out rainbows and facepalms.
Can't beat 'em, so join 'em; that about it?
