As long as you live in an apartment, buy food from a grocery store, work, drive on roads - even riding your bike through the park to get to work, you exist in that society. And until you move to a remote location and grow your own food and cotton to make into fabric to make into clothes, you will remain part of that collectiveness.

So, if not for social safety nets, your taxes would be double digits higher percentage-wise to cover the costs of those who can’t cover their own because they not only don’t have money, but they don’t have any avenue to regain their footing. Then add to that the cost of disposing of bodies after an entire family has frozen/starved to death.
