As Zombie has aptly demonstrated, gunforge didn't follow Garamet's script. I suggest she try again with the racism angle.

The guy throwing popcorn was not very likely the type to be a threat. Everyone knows all the thugs go to the dollar theater, not the regular theater.

The only way I would say the shooting was justified was if the texting guy had swung on the man and solidly connected and was giving no indications of halting his assault at that point.

In that case, I would not reasonably expect a 71 year old man to be able to successfully retreat from the assault of someone much younger and obviously angry.

At any rate, if I had to guess this won't come anywhere near being a life in prison murder case.

I figure it will be along the lines of "serve 7 years and let him out before we have to start paying a lot for his medical care".

"You know what I've noticed? Nobody panics when things go "according to plan." Even if the plan is horrifying! If, tomorrow, I tell the press that, like, a gang banger will get shot, or a truckload of soldiers will be blown up, nobody panics, because it's all "part of the plan". But when I say that one little old mayor will die, well then everyone loses their minds!".

Turns out that the reason you shouldn't text during a movie is that you might shoot someone for texting during the movie.

That really is just fucking insane. You're shooting a guy for texting which was exactly what you were doing five minutes ago?

Cinema or no cinema, people who leave keypad tones on need a good slap! Theres no reason to beep every time you press a key when texting!

Certainly not something to shoot someone over but i can understand why you could get really pissed off of this was happening in the cinema

Shooting should be reserved for people doing the following:
    1. Blocking doorways (carry your conversation somewhere else!)
    2. Acting like a dick behind the wheel (infinite list really).
    3. Not understanding (or caring about) the difference between lose and loose, then and than, there and their, etc.

One more perfect argument against everyone and his brother carrying a sidearm.

Since the majority of everyone and his brother doesn't carry, and and almost certainly never will, that argument is little more than an intellectual exercise.

Disagree - severely punish those who cannot handle the responsibility of carrying a sidearm, or drinking responsibly, or driving responsibly, etc. In the county where I live we have a huge population of military, ex-military, and generally conservative leaning people. Many people practice concealed carry and thus are armed. Our murder rate is almost zero - so here at least everyone and his brother packing is not a problem in the least. Ten people get killed in a fatal auto accident for every person fatally shot in my county. Maybe everyone and his brother shouldn't drive!

A poster on FB blamed Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law which in the early 2000s removed the obligation to retreat in self-defense situations. I haven't seen that mentioned in any press coverage, although I admit I didn't follow the case all that closely. I would very much like to hear from @RaoultheRedShirt on this. I will say that I think removing the duty to retreat opens the door to this kind of verdict, but I don't know how or if the law influenced the jury. I know a lot of prosecutors and police predicted that it would become a lot harder to get murder convictions. :chris:

They have footage of the shooting:

This thi8ng has me torn. On one hand I know the old dude was a violent prick like Frank was. OTOH wanting to beat the life out of some idiot in the movie theater is why I barely ever see a movie anymore. I remember the day when there were no cell phones to be seen in the movies and I miss it.
