Uhhh, yeah direct them to safety while not being an open target. That is what someone in that position should be doing. If he sees shooting or the kid gets hit then he can act and save the kid. The running kids need direction to go where they are undercover and safe.

This is another in a long line of terrible criticism I have seen.

You do notice he seems to be looking behind the kid and not running for his life. That is because it is best for the person running to focus on where they are going and running as fast as they can. That makes them harder to shoot and less likely to trip or run into something.

I am going to have to do some explaining on tactics and WTF goes on in the modern school shooter scene.

First off the goal is to minimize the number of targets the shooter has access to while delaying there movement as much as possible. second goals are to establish location of the shooter and to start to establish safe areas and paths for evacuation. Their goals are safe evacuation, triage, and insertion of police forces.

This is based on the planned movement of the students and teachers in the event. The students are told to stay where they are and barricade. This does mean the shooter will find some students and kill some. This is why you want to slow the killer's movement while also making them have to expend energy, time, and ammo getting to more students. While the killer is doing this you get an idea of where they are and can possibly plan on evacuating students through safe channels.

Your standard police officer is not equipped with a map and diagram of the school. If I were planning I would have administration and the school security officer be the ones who the police have to plan with for insertion because they would be the people experienced with the layout of the school. That takes time to communicate.

You do not want to send police in immediately because you are less likely to do any good while you are gathering men. The police should be establishing a perimeter, organizing medical emergency responders, closing down the streets, opening up paths to hospitals, and corralling the escaping kids to safe spaces where they can be identified and counted. You asre setting up an immediate security area. That does not just happen.

One of the reasons they want kids and teachers to barricade and hide is because the people outside are setting up the escape. Lots of gunfire confuses the children, cops, and shooter. That causes running and quick uncontrolled interractions.

The reality is some people are going to die because we have guns everywhere. It is just made so much worse because guns are everywhere. A guy knifing people might not get a killing blow and would tactically be handled differently. Part of the reality of the plan to save kids is the reality that you cannot save all of them. So you are going to try and save as many as possible. Running in to try and kill the shooter might very well be very lucky and stop death quickly. The reality is that when you do decent simulations on this sort of activity you are so much more likely to fuck things up and make things worse. You are not John McClane. That is a fucking fantasy. No one does that shit.

I do not know what the police actually did here, but do some thinking as to what actually would work.

An hour response to kill an active shooter in a remote school where you are pulling in border patrol people, I do not think is too bad. The local police might have had an opportunity to insert and end it. OTOH these are most likely dumbshit idiots just a step above you with a couple of training days. I am not talking about decent scenario oriented training days either. I am talking some target practice, a handbook, and some classroom type lessons. I would severely doubt there was any practical scenario driven training for inserting into a close live fire hostage type of situation.
