Do you think there’s going to eventually be a breaking point where enough people come to their senses and correct the ship before it hits the iceberg and goes down in flames or do you think it’s too late and a new party rises from the ashes like what happened with the Whigs? A third option is that the party hobbles along just long enough to eventually just let this time pass and the leadership brushes it under the rug never to be mentioned again.I personally want to see the party burn down and the Libertarian Party rise from the ashes, but I think that’s a long shot. The most likely outcome is they try to bury Trumpism and move on. What say you Wordforge ?
The swamp rat Republicans are basically Democrat Lite. Both are getting destroyed as more minorities embrace America First populism. We'll see it play out in November first hand just as it has in the primaries already.
problem is that most of those idiots that stormed the capitol were the "libertarian wing" of the republican party. 45, to them, is the success that they and their bootstraps might aspire to become.
I think they stopped being a normal constitutional political party about 40 years ago. Driven by an extreme subservience to wealth, they lost the ability to motivate voters other than on the basis of extremist social policies and cynicism. The scum occupying leadership positions in the party are an expression of this. I'm not clear what objective process would or could reverse it. Democrats are still a traditional bourgeoise party and are unwilling to confront these developments as they ought to.
I’ve heard some people say that the last real conservative was Barry Goldwater. I’m not sure if that’s true or not, but I think the Republicans need a guy like that. Justin Amash was kind of that type of guy, but they ran him out of the party. I’d happily vote for a guy like Amash. I did support Rand Paul, but sadly he too has succumbed to Trumpism.
I think the Democrats are going to get their asses handed to them, but I’m not sure the swamp creatures are going to go away though.
Trump ripped open a long-festering wound of racism and bigotry in this country. Granted, it was always below the surface, but coded words were used, intentions were implied. Many dogwhistles were made. Now the GOP has just outright opened up to everything, and have embraced a nationalist fervor that will only continue to embolden fascists. I believe the Republican party will not split in two. I believe what Republicans are considered too "weak" to remain will be cast out, and those Republicans will join up with the Democrats who are only a handful of steps behind them anyway. The new GOP will be outright fascist. The Democrats will be more like a traditional Republican party before Trump became the dividing line. Just my opinion, of course.
Ron Paul is just as crazy in his own way. Anyone who calls for a return to the gold standard should be one step ahead of the men in the white coats.
What do you have against restraining government spending and a sound monetary policy? You do realize that the inflation we’re experiencing is due to poor monetary policy and spending out the wazoo, right? Going back to a gold standard would help correct that.
Utter nonsense. Current inflation is due to supply chain issues, and pegging your currency to gold (besides all of the other issues that would cause) is not sustainable when you've got an enormous balance of trade deficit, as the US has had since it came off the gold standard - precisely for that reason.
Marginally at most. Inflation is an international issue, not one that you can analyse through the prism of US policy alone. Gold standard loons gave been predicting imminent hyperinflation for decades, despite record low inflation during all that time. The smart thing to do when a little eventually comes along is not to throw your lot in with them.
As people like you have shown so distinctly and often, not one of you is "coming to their senses" because the cruelty and hate is the point. You are part of the racist hate party. There is no chance you will come to your senses because you love what they do. Even the so called independents are mostly just republicans who always vote republican but try to pretend they aren't because they know full well how outright evil reps are. Oh, and so called libertarians are just Q anon conspiracy theorists who believe in Bigfoot, god, guns and MTG. Can you tell me when people are going to wake up from their false beliefs and gods? Why are people who believe in sky fairies going to suddenly start evolving and growing a working brain? Once you have been birthed with an animal brain you don't just start thinking rationally and with logic. This is because you are not capable of doing so. You do not just grow a working brain. Therefor the republicans never have to change because they will always have you as part of their base. What say me? I say that this is a shitty attempt to pretend you are not a complete trumpian tool. You are one of the millions of dingleberries on trump's ass hairs. You like what he says and does. You are never going to wake up and grow a brain because it doesn't work that way. Stop pretending you are going to vote against whatever horrible thing the reps run next. The only reason for this post is because you want to pretend you are not a trump voter without spouting that lie yet again.
Why do you think they would "correct the ship?" Republican voters have shown that they either actively want or are willing to give support to figures like Trump. This isn't an aberration, it's what the party is.
Both parties are owned by the elite and will do as the elite wishes. Until the people fight back. Which, current people won’t because they’re lazy and believe the media rather than find the truth themselves. They also are subject to propaganda and believe socialism is a bad thing. So, life will continue in this downward direction until we go up in flames.
What government spending are you talking about? Just like yourself, the government has bills to pay - salaries of DOD, military, FBI, CIA, etc., plus, all those buildings have water and electric and internet. All those things need to be paid. The “spending” you’re talking about (which, I don’t think you realize) is called “pork” is one of the few ways that government gives back to the people - special projects like … the US highway system or the Hoover Dam. If you want the government to lower costs, you’ll need to start advocating against a large military and bailing out corporations and tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations. Simply put, you’ll need to start voting for left leaning politicians right now because republicans and libertarians are lying to you.
Oh for G-d's sake....in 2017 the total worth of all the gold ever mined was $7.5 trillion dollars. Gold is up about 40% since then. So let's put the worth of all that gold at $12 trillion. In 2020, the total worth of the American GDP was about $21 trillion. So all the gold ever mind is not worth the GDP of the US economy alone. Those numbers don't compute. How would you make up for THAT deficit?
I have been advocating for those things for years, but both sides spend like drunken sailors; however, Biden added another thirty trillion to the debt all by himself.
The largest increases to the deficit have all been by Republican presidents. The largest decreases in the deficit have all been by Democratic presidents - at least, in the last … 60 to 80 years or so. Both sides will spend and accuse the other side of spending more and will say they will not spend as much. it all depends on which side is in power. Right now, neither side (or both sides) are in power as they no longer have power. Being subject to the will of the people gave them power. They no longer work for the people. Elections are decided by the party and the party is ruled by the 1%. So, neither or both will stop spending. If that’s your argument against Democrats, …. well … you’re wrong.
GDP isn't an accurate way of determining what is needed. The amount of US currency in circulation is just over 2 trillion, so to return to the gold standard the US would "only need to acquire a sixth of all gold in the world (although such a move would also heavily impact prices and probably prompt some other countries to do the same, so it's likely the price of gold would skyrocket).
You need to compare it to the money supply, not GDP. I think at the outside you'd need to back M0, maybe less, as credit and fractional reserve banking are compatible with a gold standard (reserving judgement about whether or not it's a good idea). That's something like $2-5.5 trillion, not $21 trillion. EDIT: Bailey beat me to it. Edit 2: also the US has 26% of all government gold reserves. Of course the private sector (particularly in India) has quite a bit too. Edit 3: The US has ~$340 billion in gold reserves currently.
In the past it has seemed like FF's justification for wanting this is based around thinking it would benefit him personally, not wider society.
