The source material is the play as written. It isn’t written as a 15 year old boy falling in love with a 15 year old boy. It was acted that way as you rightly pointed out that girls weren’t allowed to act in plays at the time.

But what you might see as a cash grab, a lack of confidence or shitting on something, the writers of remakes or plays on something might see as supreme confidence in their talents, a chance to match their talents against the best, a desire to bring something to a new audience, a chance to provide food for thought, etc. etc.
