I am. My connection is described as "up to 8 mbps". In reality I'm getting about 110 kbps or thereabouts, a bit over a bit under at times. It's considerably crappier than my old 1 mbps connection. Any ideas WTF is the problem?
It's most likely just line quality, and distance from the exchange. I am with the same ISP, on the same plan as I was before I moved up here, but my speeds are significantly slower because of the same reason.
8 megs the size of the pipe you're on and the theoretical max you get on 1:1 contention ratio, in reality its substantially less as you have other users. also what are you getting the 110kbps on? that sounds about right for a relatively busy (20:1 to 50:1) 8meg pipe downloading using bittorrent.
Contention ratio shouldn't have your speeds that low. For it to be as low as you're saying, the contention ration would need to be around 75:1, with all other 75 users maxing out their bandwidth constantly. Have you gotten this result from a proper speed-test site?
Also, have BT gone over to ADSL Max recently? When Demon did this, I was warned that some users had experienced a problem because the line capacity tests are run over ten days - they got good DL speeds on the first several days but poor speeds at the end of the test, so the lower end speeds were the ones "locked in" when the ten day period ended. It was recommended that users going over to ADSL Max record the DL speed daily so they could ask for a re-test if they thought their line could handle a higher rate than they got. I did it meticulously, but thankfully I was promised up to 8Mbps and wound up with 6.5, much better than my old 1.5Mbps connection.
