My dad's first reaction would be to delete it and install XP.

He's refusing to get Vista on any of the computers where he works, any computers at home, and any computers he buys in the future... until Vista is all that's available for sale.

He calls it a slow, infected piece of rotting crap. :D

    He really hates it.

There would be nothing wrong with it if the software producers got their asses in gear. Most problems stem from incompatible software and unfinished, crappy drivers. I think it will be really good once everything works. It's certainly the biggest change since Win95 which some people just can't have. MS can't do it right no matter what they do

I'd recommend waiting for most people as well...

If you have a nice machine that comes with vista, I wouldn't clear it and put XP on though.

i don't see the point in having vista unless you need to for some reason.

might as well wait a few months and use the early adopters and idiot geeks who just have to have the latest software to act as canaries.

right now XP sp2 is a pretty stable and moderately secure system, we're not going to know for around 6 months if the same can be applied to vista.

end of the day, if the operating system you have does what you want, is relatively secure and stable, why upgrade? only when its no longer doing what you want should you upgrade imo.

Not really. After looking over the OS extensively, it's just meh. And I like Microsoft, am a big fan of XP, and prefer a Microsoft OS that is a reliable and solid, stable software environment over a new, ungainly resource hogging, candy factory.

^ Well I liked it. If it wasn't for the problems I stated in the other thread...

^What CAD said.. I tried it - albeit on a 2.4ghz celeron machine. I do have 1 gig of memory - but it was sluggish to begin with, and after installing some software, it was unusable. Dragging a window across the screen left a trail, opening any program took minutes. Literally. This, by the way, was a clean install on a new SATA I 250gb HD. Maybe it just didn't like the fact that I still had an old P4PE motherboard with a socket 478 CPU?

It refused to install Kerio firewall. I then lowered my standards and tried Zonealarm. It refused to install that too. It had a problem with partition magic 8 as well, and needed an upgrade for Nero. I deleted the bitch and reinstalled XP.

Yes, I know, software makers are to blame if they make software that doesn't comply with MS programming guidelines (cutting corners to increase speed and whatnot) - but with a new product, it's MS' obligation to guarantee at least hardware compatibility. I'll wait till they patch this thing up, thank you very much.

Hate? What, I can't discuss my experiences with Vista? Come now, be serious. I've already worked on several Vista machines, removing the software and installing XP. People realize their $1300 machines are faster when using XP than Vista. Right now, from my experience, Vista is more bloat than anything else. It's eye candy, bloat, it's got a few useful features, but otherwise it's not worth upgrading or purchasing. Not yet.

well, i don't understand why people would want to use 3rd party firewall software, when you can buy routers with a built-in firewall for the price of a broadband modem and combine that with XP/vista's own firewall.

it just needlessly takes up resources.

M$ can be pretty stupid, but they can't be expected to include compatability with every piece of hardware - some stuff is just getting outdated - and windows is bloated enough, plus a lot of backward compatability and legacy code is part of why windows has so many bugs and security holes to be discovered.

and it amazes me how a few hardware incompatabilities cause people to start crying these days, surely i'm not alone in remembering the pre-plug'n'play days?

It's always the same when a new Windows comes out - doom and gloom and DRM and half a year later everybody runs it without much of a problem. It's just complaining for complaining's sake and the good old 'older is better' syndrome.

I wouldn't recommend upgrading to it... but uninstalling it from a machine you just bought so you can put XP on it? That's going a little far.

Oh and by the way you aren't "sticking it" to anyone either. MS got the cash for that copy of Vista when you bought the PC.

I have Vista and haven't had any problems, except my webcam isn't supported.
