I also want to thank her for all the times afterwards where she'd get on the phone and call everyone she knew, and spent the next week bragging to everyone that she could possible tell about it

all the time she whipped me till I was black and blue


all the time instead of taking me to the doctor, she'd leave me for the damn dogs to lick my wounds clean


all the times she'd tell me that if anyone in school (especially the social workers) asked where those damn whap marks came from, tell them that I hurt myself playing, and if I ever told ANYONE in school what really happened, that she'd whip my ass again.

A bit of a spank and kicking the shit out of your kids are two very different things.

Spankings only work as a deterrent if they almost never happen. Too much spanking makes the punishment useless.

Sitting them on an uncomfortable stool staring at a wall for 5-15 mins...now that is a punishment that keeps on giving. Being bored out of your skull instead of playing, without even much visual stimulation, that really hits 'em where they live.

Oddly enough, I turned out not to be a juvenile delinquent, and my parents never hit me.

Hell, I'm even polite to my elders.

I remember working with a girl at my job who said she was the odd child where that didn't work, and she'd still sneak away from the corner when her parents left her.

But for the most part, I'd think that is much more effective than spankings. Although not even that will work unless it's done on a consistent basis and the little brats know who's in charge.

I just can't imagine every having to strike my child, since my parents never had to.

Hey, I been there. Only my mom always threatened to send me to reform school if I told, where they beat you every day with rubber mallots and long socks with soap in them so they don't break any bones. My mom would keep me out of school if I was "showing" to much the next morning after a good beating by her or my dad. When grown I told my mom she used to blame me for everything. She said, "thats because you done or caused everything".

Out of curiosity, those of you who have kids and are still spanking them beyond the toddler stage, what exactly is it that you perceive you're teaching them?

I don't spank anymore, but I'm not opposed to giving the boy whack upside the back of his head if he gets out of line and I'm standing right there. I don't need to lecture him on the point that he did something I disapproved of.
