So, I saw this 16 year old girl with a tatoo on her back and on her arm.

I saw it at the YMCA pool and I asked this other kid how old she was. I can't help thinking that the girl is now doomed. Somehow I detect a wee touch of manufactured housing in a gal like that.

8 kids from 10 different daddy's, and a trailer park.

Maybe in the past, but tatoos are very much in the mainstream of society. You never know.

How do you get that from the fact that she has a tattoo or two?

To get a tat when you're a minor you need parent approval.

Some are, but not girls with ink all over their backs, fronts etc. Still limited to trailer trash etc IMHO.

That one on her arm will be seen by all unless she has on long sleeves. I just think it will make it harder for her to get a decnt job, I could be wrong.

Tats aren't an issue as much anymore. You see them on teens and 20 somethings all the time up here.

I don't know about that. There are plenty of companies that WILL NOT hire someone with visible tattoos, and the answer for that is timeless: They are Trashy and send a message of trash.

Some part of me wishes that every person who ever used the expression "trailer trash" had the opportunity once in their life to be thankful for a trailer to live in....but I guess I understand that it's a cultural term like "redneck"

In the age of discrimination lawsuits, and the overwhelming popularity of both tattoos and piercings...

Thus would not be a wise move on the companies part...

Why not? Having tatoos is not protected in employment law. It's perfectly legal to not hire someone because they have visible tatoos. No legal basis for a lawsuit there.

There's a major difference between living in a trailer, and being the trash that caused the name to become synonomys w/ a lifestyle.

Oh please, no judge in his right mind. is going to equate a tattoo or piercing with skin color or sexual orientation.

Well, I take that back, the 9th Circuit would.

Its not what you live in but how you live, but unfortunately many live up to the name. Especially those who live in trailer parks.

Exactly. These people don't stop and think about what they are doing. They are condemning themselves to low paid jobs unless it is possible to hide the tattoo.

(or they are a rock star)

I know that police and corrections here in South Florida are starting to get super strict on that even with military veterans. It doesn't matter what the tattoo is either.

The worst IMHO are the people who tattoo their necks. Especially the girls. You've essentially branded yourself like cattle in my opinion when you do that. You might as well give up and just start a life of crime right now because short of winning the lottery you're screwed for life.

I can't wait to see all these people when they are in their 70's.

I just don't see the point of a tattoo. What is important enough to me to have permanently applied to my body? Because to me that's what you're saying - this symbol, word, picture, whatever, is SO IMPORTANT, has SO MUCH MEANING to me, that I want to carry it with me every moment of every day for the rest of my life. The only thing that's ever been that important to me is my unborn son. Even then I don't get his name tattooed on me because of my general distaste for tattoos. And of course the slight chance he could still turn out to be a girl. That's what I don't get about people who get stupid shit like barbed wire or butterflies or dancing Mexican chicks...do these people stop and think about what they're saying about themselves in those situations?

As a manager, I believe and hope I could overlook visible tattoos if I was hiring a new employee. I think it would have to do with how extensively tattooed the candidate was.

There was a girl I went to college with (this last time, not 20 years ago) who went and got one of those big lower back tattos the summer after she graduated and regreted it within ONE WEEK but she can't afford to do anything about it

she is otherwise a wholesome girl and I'd hope it doesn't hold her back but it's a cuationary tale.

The back tatoos can easily be covered. I know a lot of fellow students with those and I see no reason why they can't have jobs.

Face and arms is a different matter.

I've worked in (classy) restaurants, and even for a couple of computer hacker friends, and in both places my bosses, be they chefs or computer programmers (and in on case an astronomer) all had tats and piercings - very visible ones.

And I hear that in both Portland Oregon & in NY city, it's a fad for chefs to get inked.

And I know a psychiatrist (and mother of two) here in town who has a visible tat (when she wears a dress in the summer) on her ankle.

I don't think that tattoos automatically = crappy jobs. Or = "trash" (That is such a bigoted attitude, IMHO.)
Some people may not want to work in some office or flipping burgers or for some boss who requires them to look like a conformist sheep. Granted, it takes a talented, creative, & dedicated person to be able to find or make a job that let's them be themselves. And maybe most people with tats aren't such people. But most *people* aren't such people.

I would love a tattoo (I want a Indian man-in-the-maze design) but I just have other financial priorities right now, and good body art costs. I do have an earing, and in no place I have ever worked has it been a problem. I don't think I'd be happy working in a place that it was. (I worked in an office once, it fucking *sucked*.)

In fact, one of my first bosses (a chef) encouraged me to get one (I wasn't brave enough) and my second boss, and computer programmer and author, *payed* for me to finally have it done!!! He drove me to the mall and practically held my hand!!!

Looking around, tattoos are mainstream now. There is no more stigma, and companies probably can't afford to chose by that ridiculous criterion. Everybody has them so suck it up

I am, by the way, thinking of getting into the removal business. By the time my generation is 50, this will be a billion € thing

Yeah, around here not having a tattoo is the exception.
