Money and happiness are remarkably unrelated. Whatever his demons are, I seriously doubt they have anything to do with money.
I'll be totally honest here, and say that I think suicide attempts are such an extreme act that it's highly unlikely that anyone attempts them lightly. Let's just say that the topic hits a little too close to home for me to just pooh-pooh it as a "spoiled famous rich guy" stunt.
Agreed. What Albert doesn't realize is, if he needs to fake a suicide attempt to validate anything in his life, he has some serious problems, regardless of money. Albert just proved himself wrong, it looks like.
I'm not gonna bust on Uncle Albert too hard. I can see how it might be hard to understand this kinda thing until you have personal experience with it (either yourself or someone close to you).
Considerable. Everyone's got secrets and dark corners and unresolved damage. Some just choose to yell about everything else in order to try to hide it.
This thread has been a revelation. I expected a lot more UncleAlbert "walk it off or fuck yourself!" reactions.
I only know what I read here every day, and I see a general lack of compassion on the part of some people (not you) toward their peers. Then there are the scum who take Blue Room revelations and use them to hound people. WF generally doesn't get high marks for empathy.
Hard to relate, yeah. But to think someone can't possibly have personal problems cause they're rich? And then berating that person BECAUSE they're rich and still depressed? I dunno. That bothers me.
How exactly did you mix up Wilson with Britney Spears? But seriously, there are some celebrities that give others with personal problems a bad name. We see Britney (to use an example) on the cover of every fucking up her life and being emo because of things she actually had control over--like, I dunno, her drug use. Or picking a husband that has better class than to leave his other girlfriend while pregnant. Or using birth control so that if you thought your first child was a "mistake" ( ) you don't get accidentally knocked up yet again. And people see that and think that any celebrity that isn't happy with life is a whiny attention whore and deserves scorn. I don't know much about Owen Wilson, not a big fan of his or anything. But somehow, I don't think that whatever he's going through is entirely (and probably not even mostly) his fault. I kind of know what it's like to want to just end it all, and I probably wouldn't be here today if I hadn't been scared into the idea that if I did it, I'd go to Hell for it. It's not a feeling I'd wish on my worst enemy, and it's not a problem that you can throw money at and think it'll go away.
People do odd things when suffering from depression. Some of them get lucky and have some people there who do care and will try to help them through it. Others have no one and thus suffer from inconsiderate remarks from people who just couldn't care no matter what so they have to suffer in silence and often end up committing suicide because they are alone.
People don't kill themselves because they have problems. Everybody has problems, some of them really bad ones, and most people never attempt suicide, even if they think about it sometimes. People kill themselves because for whatever reason, being dead seems preferable to remaining alive. Some people do attempt suicide to get attention, but it's usually pretty easy to tell if they were serious or not. I don't feel like I know enough about Owen Wilson's situation to comment on that specifically. I certainly wish him a speedy recovery and good mental health from now on.
That wasn't my point, my point was that the money he has would give him a good chance at setting himself up doing whatever it is that would make him happy. He's got enough money to totally get out of the fame game and not be trapped in the same cycle of depression which will affect the average joe. You gotta be kidding with those three right?
That's assuming his problems can be fixed by money. In a lot of cases money has been shown to cause more problems than it fixes. Look at the shit that happens to a lot of lottery winners. Money can't buy happiness if you have low self-worth. Plus being famous tends to draw the scum of society to you who simply want to leach off of your fame and wealth. Wilson is primarily a comedian, and comedians are notorious for having heavy baggage in their pasts that fuels their comedy (i.e. Robin Williams). If the guy doesn't like himself, no amount of money is going to fix it.
So am I gonna get some credit if it turns out the dude just had a fight with his girlfriend or something? And of course he did it for attention. How else could someone with any real degree of wealth at their disposal fail at killing himself? Stop trying to make sure you sound like "good" people, and acknowledge reality.
Nope. Why should you? That's a perfectly reasonable catalyst for depression. Especially if he is very fond of his girlfriend, and they have been fighting quite a lot. How is wealth going to modulate a person's ability to die? Any poor person can throw himself off of a cliff, and any rich person can swallow a bottle of pills and get discovered by someone who then calls 911. And as far as attention, DUH! Haven't you ever heard, "Suicide attempts are a cry for help"? Stop trying to sound like a "tough" guy, and acknowledge reality. It's becoming clear that you don't know anything about human nature or depression. Maybe your life is sunshine and roses, but not everyone's is, and I for one would never dare to second guess the kind of problems that someone has, especially if they are bad enough to bring on a suicide attempt.
I don't give a fuck about sounding like a good, compassionate person. I'm not here to impress a single fucking person. I'm also not going to go out of my way to act like a dickhead just because you think it would be more genuine. This is the straight shit from me.
If you want to be genuine, recognize the truth. If he wanted to die, he'd be dead. No way would someone with any kind of money be so unbelievably stupid that they can't come up with a successful means of offing themself. So, he did it for attention, or as a "cry for help," if you prefer. As far as I 'm concerned, that is a selfish, chickenshit way of getting attention. Drag your friends and family through all that shock and fear because you're just too weak to pick up the phone and make an appointment with a therapist or even ask a buddy out for a beer to hear your sob story. Nope, gotta pull some big, melodramatic fucking stunt to make sure everyone notices you properly. Either he's a self-absorbed asshole with no regard for what he puts other people through, or he's incredibly fucking incompetent.
Just you wait. It'll happen to someone you care about (I wish for this to NEVER happen, by the way, it sucks) and you'll change your tune.
Because in any other country of the world he would be told to grow a set for those problems! Yes, certain mental problems are terrible and I have sympathy for people affected by them, but not those three. That list reads too much like the American, getting in touch with your feelings bullshit! Love life go's tits up- unlucky pal, it happens to us all!!! His dad never hugged him! Gimme a break! The other one is definatley more serious and would probably need proffesional help to deal with, but I wouldnt have thought it was a good reason to top yourself.!
Listen, asshole, I have had someone very close to my family, someone I knew personally and spent a good deal of time with, off themself on Christmas Eve, alright? Do I have a right to my own fucking opinion now? My "tune" isn't designed to help anyone feel better or ensure anyone that I'm a good, compassionate person. It's a stark assessment of the reality of the situation, which is an act of weakness and selfishness, of total disregard for the people around you, or worse yet, of the active intent to cause people pain. If my absolute best, lifelong friend tried to kill himself, or I caught him in the act, I would bitchslap him across the fucking face and tell him to think about his family, friends, everyone who depends on him, everyone who cares about him, everyone he will hurt with his self-absorbed act of apathy and surrender. I guess you could say I subscribe to the "get the fuck over yourself" school of mental therapy.
