For those that own both, which do you use more? Reason for asking is that I've been seeing some pretty tempting offers for some very good laptops lately, but I seem to be having a problem finding a justified reason for buying one. I have two desktops at home, and along with using the company computer at work (which I'm typing on at this very moment), I really cant see the need to owning a laptop as well. (not to mention that the FBI reported Laptops as the #1 stolen items of 2006)
Two desktops and a laptop for me. Seriously, if you do most of your internet surfing on a desktop, I dunno if you'll use the laptop much. It's convenient to have, on the 2-3 times a year you want to take it out, but other than that... The most useful thing I use it for is I have it in sleep mode at the foot of my bed, so if I can't sleep, I just sit up and surf Wordforge a bit before getting tired.
I have both and use both about equally. Desktop is far more powerful, but laptop I need for work and is convenient.
I have both. The desktop is in the office, and is a more powerful machine. I used it mainly for gaming. The laptop is just kind of a weanie laptop. I keep it in the living room and use it for general web surfing and whatnot while watching TV.
I adore the laptop. I don't move it around much, but just knowing it is mobile is very nice. I hate not having a num pad, but bought the targus side num pad so entering data is much easier with the laptop. (You can't make a division symbol on a laptop keyboard.)
I do, I use the laptop up at school for doing work up there or any time I need to do work on the go, and I keep the desktop for storing most of my files and playing video games.
I have a laptop in need of repairs, two desktops (in pieces scattered around the house), and a non-working palmpilot.
Two laptops, two desktops, one PDA, one Audrey. If you can't really think of a reason to be able to pack a computer around beyond "It might be nice," then really, it probably isn't worth it. There are some relatively cheap options coming out soon in terms of lightweight, portable, and cheap "ultra-mobile" PCs. They're not terribly powerful, thus the relatively low price, but they get web/e-mail/office out of the way quite nicely.
Five desktops, enough spare parts to build at least two more and I have a laptop. I use two desktops quite often and the laptop when I travel.
I have two desktops (one for office use, the other for network storage), my laptop, a UMPC (Samsung Q1Ultra), and my PocketPC (Treo). I use all of them quite frequently, more than enough to justify having them. I'm one productive mofo.
I have two laptops (Mac/Windows) for Web site testing, plus my primary machine, a G5 dual 2.0 Mac (kinda getting long in the tooth), plus a Mac mini for the Home theater rack — I watch baseball on it. And my wife has a laptop. And my kids use an old iMac. That's not counting the semi-functional laptops (3) sitting on my gear rack...waiting to be fixed or sold. And a couple of old desktop computers in the closet for when i figure out how to make a mail server out of them. I'm kind of a packrat when it comes to tech.
We have two desktops and a laptop. OH mainly uses the desktops, I mainly use the laptop. I don't play games, I use it for surfing and stuff, so it's all I really need.
I've only had two computers ever in my life, the first one being fairly outdated two years before I got it. The on e I have has been jacking up so a new computer is definitely in the plan, but I'm not sure if I want a laptop that saves space in my room (As this computer will go to my brother, to get him the hell out my room permanently) or another desktop. I do watch quite a few videos online and want some power to play around with programs such as Anime studio and Photoshop. Space isn't my biggest concern, since I can always buy an external harddrive separately, but I do want something with a lot of RAM. I'm not sure which one I should get.
One laptop, one desktop. Desktop does all my normal computer stuff. Laptop goes with me EVERYWHERE, which is why I wanted an itty-bitty one. I take it with me to class, to work, on planes, on trips. I'm taking it with me to Orlando this week for an irrigation seminar. I also have a portable, battery-powered printer to go with it, and eventually I'm getting one of those mobile-card things to sign onto the internet from wherever I am. So, the laptop is fairly essential to me.
I love having mine. They're absolutely wonderful if you live in a large urban area with EVDO coverage. To me it's worth every freakin' penny. However, when you start getting out into BFE where I live, the speed drops to dial-up, but it's better than nothing when you're on the go.
Two desktops and two laptops and a pocketpc. Zel and I each have a desktop and a laptop. Zel has the pocketpc. I mainly use the laptops now because I really have to keep my legs up most of the time to battle edema. But my laptop is plenty powerful enough for my surfing, shopping, gaming and art I use it for. My view is if you want it and can afford it there is no reason to "justify" buying what you like. But if you are not sure you want it, then wait until you are. Either way, I would wait a few weeks as stores start making deals and sales for Christmas...Black Friday in particular can produce some amazing bargains and they can often be obtained online if you don't want to battle the crowds.
One desktop, one personal laptop, one work laptop. Surf mainly on the desktop (larger monitor screen), but if it is being used I'll switch to one of the laptops.
2 dektops in the house and a laptop I take on the road with me. So obviously, the one I'm using depends on whether I'm at home or on the road.
I'll probably have to go online, then. If I'm still working at Target by black Friday, they schedule everyone to work that day. The only day that's worse than that is Christmas Eve
5 desktops and an laptop that is mainly used with KVM as an extended desktop. My only advice is to be wary of the "really good deals" as in the ones that are <800. Most of those laptops use desktop type processors, as opposed the the more expensive, "mobile", battery-saving processors. You can expect 60-90 minutes battery life tops out of the cheap ones, which pretty much negates the whole point of having a laptop. If there is anything particular that interests you, post a link or some specs and I'm sure we can advise...
