Seems He Just Joined the Nazi Party! Sunday, December 23 http://uk.news.yahoo.com/wenn/20071223/ten-smith-hitler-was-a-good-person-c60bd6d_1.html
Really? Seems like he said that Hitler thought he was doing what was right, but what was right to him was evil to us, that he wasn't being evil for the pure sake of being evil.
This is one of those statements that, when analyzed, is actually shown to be true. No doubt, Hitler did not think of himself as evil; Hitler certainly did not look on his cause as wrong. And the statement about "pain and suffering" is debateable, depending on how one means it. But the forces of political correctness will probably run with it, making the leap of logic WILL SMITH = NAZI.
^^^Now that kind of spin is gonna give me a warp 9 headache. Besides, I guess Willie never read Mein Kampf
What spin? I think Smith's statement is true. He stated that Hitler believed he was doing the right thing which is TRUE. No one ever thinks that they're the bad guy. Note that Smith did not say that Hitler actually did good, only that Hitler thought he was acting according to his own perspective on good. I don't see anything to argue with there.
Yeah, I mean if you sincerely believed the Jews were evil and were bringing your country down, then trying to eliminate them would be a good thing (in your eyes). You gotta wonder what it was like when Hitler died and found himself in Hell--"Wait, what the fuck!? I tried to kill all the Jews! You can't blame me that the fucking Americans and Soviets stopped me!"
I like the way Christopher Hitchens defines evil. One can be deluded or warped into thinking pretty much any abomination is good. But true evil is that extra little bit above and beyond you didn't have to do. That extra little twist of caprice. Hitler had that x-factor. He was evil.
No, if some easily pigeonholed white guy had said it, maybe. Say Russell Crowe. The breathless news stories could run the footage of his old movie where he played an Aussie skinhead type.
I can see where he's trying to go with it. Some Polyanna-ish "we can save Darth Vader! We can! There is good in him!", sentiment, but meh, no 'fanks.
I read this the same way Paladin does. And I can really see cinemas pulling a movie that's doing as good business as Legend is.
paladins on the nose, no spin. only the genuinely evil really delight in taking what they know to be wrong and revelling in it. hitlers actions were evil, but the man himself thought he was doing what was best for his nation - the road to all manner of hells are paved with good intentions, the final solution was a notably horrific one of in catalogue of many.
If anyone can read those quotes and think that Will Smith is defending Hitler, there's gotta be something wrong with their brain.
Maybe Will Smith and Mel Gibson will team up in a new buddy picture about shotdown pilots in WW2 down behind the lines. In spite of their best efforts to do nothing, they constantly foil Hitler's attempt to get the Holocaust in high gear. It'll be called You Say Goodbye, I Say Hell No We Aren't Saving Those Jews.
Or maybe he didn't read it through the narrow end of the telescope. This should more properly be in the Red Room. Tell me, Bulldog, how many people do you know who get up in the morning and say "Today I'm going to be Evil"?
An excellent movie on the subject is The Downfall. The portrayal of Hitler and especially Goebbels (which generated a lot of controversy at the time) really illustrate Smith's point.
Interesting that it's told from the POV of Traudl Junge. I remember her interviews for the old BBC series The World at War. Thanks for the recommendation - I'll have to look for this film. Did considerable research on Goebbels for a book, and I'd be intrigued by a different perspective.
Not a chance in hell. Far less talented people have said far more stupid things without a blip. the average person (read: the vast majority of all people) don't give a rat's ass what a celebrity SAYS. That's not why they buy tickets.
Smith is very talented and seems fairly intelligent for a celebrity. He can do both comedy and drama. Sings, dances, directs... and he makes harmless rap songs that don't refer to 'bitches' and 'bling'. I also hear he is a decent basketball player. Young blacks would do well if they looked in his direction for a positive role model.
So how did they get that way? Were they born evil? Or did someone make them evil? Could it be...Satan?
