Why is calling a Spade a Spade considered racist?

Wait, I thought the expression was 'Lets call a spic a spic'.

That's what I've been saying, is that wrong?

Exactly. Throwing in "if you pardon the term" and the fact that it was aimed directly at Mewa.

"It's simply time someone called a spade a spade....if you will pardon the term ;)."

It's simply time someone called a N a N....if you will pardon the term ;).

Shep knew exactly what he was doing.

Being in the Army I had a word for these kids...typical.
I mean that are everywhere. Nobody called them "mulatto" but they were called "mixed" most of the time.
Of course it was used just as a descriptive term, like "I think that puppy running loose belongs to that mixed girl in Building 3" for example.

Mulatto was something Conquistadors used in their Caste system IIRC

    Americans are a mutt culture.

We are the rejects and malcontents of the world all thrown into a big pot.

Often there is fucking. And babies.

I myself am part French, part English (so I often disdain myself) and a smidge of Native American. And gods knows what else thrown in...

Let me walk you through it ladies....

    1. Shep is speaking of Mewa

    2. Shep uses the typical, run-of-the-mill expression "call a spade a spade"

    3. it occurs to Shep that some might assume that this reference is a direct racial dig at Mewa, rather than a happenstance coincidence

    4. Rather than change the use of the term to protect the delicate sensibilities of some of the more fragile around here, Shep includes a verbal wink acknowledging that he noticed the coincidence but meant nothing by it...a simple tongue in cheek nod at that which would be whined about and try to disarm it.

    5. Two delicate flowers assume the use of the phrase, especially when acknowledged, was racist.

Simple fact: if I had not acknowledged it, they likely would still have called me racist for using it in a reference to Mewa, so bullshit about how the addendum makes an innocent phrase racist is stupid.

The only way I escape the accusation is not using the term.

In other words, the rough and tough Zombie who decries the pussification of Wordforge is being a pussy about a harmless turn of the phrase.

I won't mention Rosie because yall all EXPECT him to be a pussy.

In any case, with 16 or 17,000 posts, I figure if I was a racist yall would have figured it out by now. so the two pussies can wipe their eyes and STFU.

Because sometimes the "proper word" isn't very proper at all.

I do it because everyone else does.

(Much the same reason I do anything really...)

    I think baba started it.

And I seem to notice that it's spelled that way when referring to the dumber aspects of our collective behavior...

It's not something typically used today by anyone because of its racial overtones.

I dare you to say it to any black man or woman and then come back and tell us what happened.

Then perhaps you shouldn't have made it. Thousand other ways to dig at him.

What a incredibly smart idea! Don't use a racist phrase and try to get slick with it by throwing in a smilie.

Wow! Amazing! You must be a fucking genius to have come up with that idea!

I don't tolerate racism. Especially racism dressed up as "a harmless turn of the phrase."

That misspelling's been 'round for a while. I accidentally spelled Wordfogre that way in a thread and MD propelled it into old meme status.

My sister-in-law, who's ignorant white trailer trash from Tenn., calls black children "nigglets".

That both disgusts me, and makes me wonder if they should come in a butter sauce...

Spelled that way it reads like Worf Ogre. Which sounds like a character in a really bad D&D/TNG crossover.

The phrase came about around 2,000 years ago and basically meant speaking directly about a topic, about 80 years ago "spade" was used as a racial slur.

To most it primarily refers to a card suit, you know like clubs, diamonds and hearts.

After that a garden tool, a shovel.

Of course I don't doubt it is well on its way to joining the PC Bad List of Words, better known as PC BLOWS.

    As for the original post:
Kids that don't easily fit into the crude concept of race?

Mostly because giving significance to the phenotypic expression of genetic heritage is silly. In other words, it's not the word it's the intent of the person using it.

Well, either you're racist, or you displayed an outstanding lack of common sense.

I tend to think it's the latter, for the most part.

At the evry least, it's a poor choice of words. As I've said, it wouldn't have even occurred to me, UNTIL you said "No pun intended ;)"

Being tough does NOT mean chuckling at an overtly racist faux paus, by the way.

If only inbred hicks like me care about race, why do organizations like the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People or the United Negro College Fund or the Black Congressional Caucus still exist and matter?

I'm okay with kids just being kids, but since race still matters and mulattos are neither black nor white, what are they?

    1) how about "Oreo"

    2) A spade is a playing card suit or a garden tool. I'm sorry if someone wants to think it's racist. Poor you, boo hoo. If he had said nigger I would agree, but he used a word that was racist for a very short period of time and not with the significance that nigger had. So shut the fuck up already. :)

Oreo is black on the outside but white in the middle. More a mindset than a comment on heritage.

And if he had left it at that, I (nor Zombie) would care. Which you'd know if you bothered to read my posts on the matter instead of jerking your knee thru the ceiling.

But he took special measures to illustrate that their were racist implications in that remark.

So maybe you oughta be the one to shut the fuck up :)
