The real problem with Xanne Joi's comment lies not with the assertion that she has a right to free speech without government retribution, but rather in the assertion that the Berkeley City Council's actions constituted speech in the first place.

For example, if a city councilman said "I hate blacks and Jews," he shouldn't face any government-imposed consequences, because he has a right to free speech. If the council tried to ban black- and Jewish-owned businesses from a certain area, that would be another matter entirely.

They should pass the bill anyway, regardless of whether or not those worthless air-thieves backpedal on their bullshit.

Well, to be fair, their initial action had all the tooth of a UN resolution.

They were going to basically send out a strongly worded letter, telling the Marine recruiters they were very, very disappointed in them. And they were going to explore looking into the possibility of maybe taking action. Oh, and they gave some annoying hippies in Hare Krishna hand-me-downs implicit approval to act like douches with the city's blessing.

So the marines can continue to try to recruit impressionable kids to shoot up other countries. Wonderful.
