See how the starbase is the same design as Starbase 47 from the Taurus Reach in the Vanguard series? SWEEEEEEEEEET!! Although depending on the pic, they may have gotten the scale wrong. That starbase is supposed to be able to internally drydock up to 4 Connie Class Starships. The schematics came as an insert with the first Vanguard book. My geek meter is climbing fast!! Gimme my nerd glasses, stat!!
Watched it this afternoon. This episode definitely benefitted from the new FX. Still a great story, too!
Meh. An editor frind of mine said, he keeps wondering why they choose such bad angles and stupid movements for the ships. Can't argue with him.
Yeah....if it were up to me, I'd add about 30 minutes of run time to an episode like that, just to get in more exterior effects shots , but I do see what they're trying to do with it.
Mmmmmmm nah. I see it as trying to be different and just blowing it. Didn't they originally say they were just going to recreate the original shots, not change them in any way? These guys don't seem to be very good cinematographers.
To be fair, Forbin, the original shots were pretty much them whipping the model past the camera in a manner that they prayed wouldn't result in it flying off the tracks and through the back wall of the studio (or was it whipping the camera past the model in a manner that they prayed wouldn't result in it flying off the tracks and through the back wall of the studio? Don't remember exactly how they did it then). I expect that they were doing something similar to what they did with the title credits - move the CG model past the camera in a way that is reminiscent of the way the Enterprise moved in the original footage, but at the same time making those movements make sense. Which, let's be honest, no matter how beautiful the ship is, they didn't quite frequently. Just be glad it isn't doing shit like what we saw on New Voyages . I do agree that some of the angles were off, and I think that if they were going to change it, it would have been nicer to have the quarters be a little closer so that we could see some damage (like the beautiful work they did on the Constellation in The Doomsday Machine).
Well, geek that I am, I just broke out my copy of Harbinger and checked the station schematics, and yup, they hosed up the scale. The station should probably be a whole order of magnitude bigger than it is on TV. The schematic clearly shows 4 Connie class cruisers internally drydocked. Okay, Trek Remastered is a bunch of losers. And I'm not going to go see the new movie now because they ruined the technical continuity for me.
That is one point that I will definitely agree on. The CG on that entire station was thrown together - it looks like shit and it isn't scaled correctly. I forget - is that the same design that the K7 was? If so, then I'm pretty sure that they also screwed up the size on DS9's Trials and Tribble-ations.
So what's the verdict compared to something like 'Doomsday Machine'? Seems to me that was the best I've seen so far.
It was originally the K-7 design, at least according to Memory Alpha. I guess they decided to do something new instead for the remastered version, which is a shame, because IIRC, their K-7 model was pretty good, and didn't look like it was shit out of Blender in ten minutes by an intern.
They clearly need better QA. I didn't see the episode, but I can tell you from the screenshot there's problems. Note the lowest ship in the picture. Notice anything odd about it? No? Look at how it's lit. There's shadows from one of the other ships on the hull! Unless this episode takes place a lot closer to a star than I think it does, there's absolutely no reason for there to be shadows cast like that, except laziness on the part of the modeling guy, who clearly left a light source in he was supposed to take out, or compensate for.
What station is airing these? I have yet to see one. TV Land reruns Star Trek but doesn't show the HD versions.
Son of a bitch, Time Warner doesn't have that station in HD. Looks like I'll have to bust out the old HD Antenna.
