I still play, finally starting to do some modding and running a few of the scenarios for fun, but I've always just enjoyed just playing the game.

Though given the choice, I'd rather have a few buddies and play Avalon Hill's Civilization all weekend.

I had fun with it for a while but ultimately it fell victim to that most gruesome of game deaths: fun, but not fun enough to justify the time spent.

So many games, so little time with which to play them.

I've wasted hours of my life playing one game. Damn, it's addictive.

I've rediscovered Civ 4 with the Beyond the Sword expansion, but as good as it is, it doesn't come close to Civ 3

    I  Civ 3.

I've stopped playing it so much in the last few weeks, but it's quite a wonderful game.

Check out GMT Games faisent. There are some really awesome board games there. I highly recommend Barbarossa to Berlin, Here I Stand(for groups), and Paths of Glory. All of them have online modules as well which makes for great PBEM gaming.

I don't think I could handle PBEM games, though I wouldn't mind doing a game regularly if we can get a few people to login in once a week for 3-4 hours. Might be pretty fun to play the game with real opponents and talk about it here.

    Any takers?

haven't played IV yet. I like Civ III, but there were things about it I didn't like. Tried playing Civ II, but that was like pulling teeth after playing III. I don't even own the original anymore ...

I'm in, although it might be hard to find a time that suits 3-4 people.

    Saturdays?

I could do every other Saturday I think, and I could be free pretty much anytime - I figure we'd probably play around GMT 1900 or so - that's 7pm for most in Europe and 2pm for the EST - of course I could play earlier or later.

If we get 3-4 we can do a smallish map and probably play it out over the course of 4 sessions, and if that goes well we can try to do something larger with AIs and Teams.

I haven't tried MP Civ4; though I did a bit with Civ3 and I'm sure the concepts are pretty much the same.

I hate that - also, you can only build your civilization so big. After that, the corruption and waste is more of a hindrance than having the city.

I'm in for some CivIV action. I can usually play any time on Sunday. Saturdays are more dicey.

A few millennia ago, when I was young :?:I got a hold of alpha centaury. Anybody know that one? I loved it! My best friend for a time. Then I totally forgot it until I fell on Civ 3. Same engine isn’t it? Then came civ 4 and I immediately jumped on it.

Wasted quite some time on that game to. But the thing is: I cant really regret it :P. Great fun, especially in multiplayer. We would get together with a 3 or 4 friends Friday evening and just play our self silly till the sun came up. Quite a few memorable games.

I'm a slow learner however. Too dumb for these games. It took me a 1000 years untill I could finally survive against the AI in Monarch.

It's been some time, but I still get it out once in a while. Got War Lords and Beyond the Sword expansions. Still a great game!

I couldn't figure out the stupid weapons on Alpha Centauri. And I never did get a chart for the technologies, either.

I still have the game, I just never play it - and I've never even gotten close to winning ...

Yeah, in memory they are also way more powerful then what you can get in civ 4. Use one and the whole world turned against you :P

What I loved most is the atmosphere of the game. Graphically it was also more serious then civ 4. No funny heads and comical remarks from the civ leaders. The whole game hade a darker fealing.

I dont have it any more... Maybe lost it the last time I moved. I remember I had a hard time with the technology to. But the principle of being able to create your own units was great.

There's a weapon in the Final Frontier scenario that basically turns an entire planet into an ever-lasting fireball. I've had a few scorched-earth type games where entire star systems were completely leveled by multiple uses of it. Kind of like using the Stellar Converter in Masters of Orion 2.

I didn't really hook on to that scenario. It was fun for one game, but I soon lost interest in it. Just cant beat the original game :P . And when in the mood for a fast game, go for a 2 vs 2 cynlindar map, blazing turn-timmer, 150 rounds or so and random civs for the fun. That will get your blood pumping.

One of my favorite things to do is squeeze in tons of civs on a small map and then either OCC it or try to crush everyone before swordsmen are worthless.

I read about a rushing strategy using the roman civ. Praetorian rush. It relies heavily on chopping woods for the hammer-boost. Its not that fun but it works great. It supposed to work even on deity difficulty level. I tried it on Monarch and ruled.

I'm a semi-peaceful player. I usually rush my nearest neighbour, so I quickly get 5 or 6 cities. That usually means I then have to reduce my research to 20 or sometimes even 10 % to make up for the extra costs. Once the economy is straitened out however, most of the time I more then catch up the lost research time :P

I just pick the 'cheap' civs (Native Americans in Civ3 and the Khemer in Civ4) and then try and culture bully my way to victory
