Ringo writes military sci fi, and he's always a good adventure-story read. I just finished "Into the Looking Glass." Here he gives us an alien invasion of present-day Earth, through stargates accidentally created in a physics lab. While it's chock full of Ringo's usual exciting battles, he puts a bit of his tongue in his cheek in this one, and gives us human characters who have read the same sci fi we've read, and watched the same TV we've watched. When a scientist introduces a genuine prototype mecha suit to the force, the anime fans in the troops know exactly what it is and not only accept it without a second thought, but have a brief discussion of favorite animes. My favorite punch line is right off of WF - when the aliens look like they might be averrunning an area, a SEAL team leader says "We're gonna have to nuke them." One of his men says (say it with me) "From orbit? It's the only way to be sure." Fun read. Do eeet.
Indeed! I have to get that collected in one format some time. I have some books in hardcover, some in paperback, and at least one as an html printout from a free CD that came with another Baen book.
