    Hey all

I startecd a similar thread like this last election, and here goes another. Our local primaries are on Tuesday and I'm lookin at the sample ballots online and under the Special Election thing for both parties they have this question, whoever wrote it could've put it a little simplier:

uh...what? Would someone break that down for me? Thanks!

If their is anyone in Georgia (or even in Cherokee Co) who will be voting Tuesday and is intrested in what the other questions are:

    On the Republican Ballot:

Think about that one is...its asking us to vote if we should vote on it.

    Next:

    bout time...

And the one that I think all the Reps in the state will see..

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And all you GA Dems out there get only one question:

Eh...Put simply "You people want MARTA (Metro ATL Rail and Transit Auth, Atlanta's train system), here?" They tried it a few years back, didn't go over to well. Most people said they didn't want the crime that MARTA brings. Then again, at that time games was less than a $1.50 and is now $4. Personally I see both arguments, though I won't be voting on this ballot, the outcome still intrests me.

If anyone in the area is intrested in getting a hold of a sample ballot:

    Dems:

    Reps:

Anyways, thanks for answering my original question and any thoughts on anything else:)

    :soma: My head hurts.

Ok, time for a US politics lesson. What do these polls do? IIUC, they're limited to Dem or Rep ballots -- so surely they won't turn whatever proposal they name directly into a law? Do they determine the state party's platform?

Seriously though, I've always heard horror stories about MARTA but haven't had any problems when I've actually used it.

Much quicker to get to my cousin in Alpharetta from Hartsfield via MARTA than driving!

Bad, bad idea. Policymakers should be elected; administrators should be appointed.

Not trying to be snarky, but where does school superintendent fall in that spectrum?

Not honestly sure, but that'll pass easily. The current BOE superintendent has pissed off a whole lot of people since he was brought up from Florida and people are chomping at the bits to get rid of him.

Ya, thats why I started this thread, after reading the 1st question (the ad valorum tax), my head hurts because of the wording of it (and I still don't get what they are asking)

but ya, pretty much the 1st one will (I believe) be binding since it'll be on both ballots, and the other questions are the parties way of figuring out what platform should be at the party at the state and local levels

As an administrator, hired by and answerable to the school board.

However, based on what The Commandaunt just said, it sounds like they might be talking about the head of the state's department of education, whereas I was thinking about the chief administrator of a school district. So this might be a different case. (However, I'm dubious about any law that seeks to make major changes in a position due to the person who holds the position right now being unpopular.)

Which leads to the question: Why the hell are taxpayers subsidizing the process of the two major parties figuring out their platforms? Let the parties do that on their own dime.

Err... same reason the taxpayer pays for the parties to decide on their candidate. America is a two party state.

What in my post above, or any post I have made on the subject of government keeping us locked in a two party system, would give you the impression that I find the situation to be desirable in away way?

The . Generally implies indifference, in this case to the status quo.

Indifference or just acceptance that that is how it is at the moment?

Neither of which implies anything 'good' btw.

Just thought I'd try one more time to get my original question answered before I go vote tomorrow, if anyone knows, their is probaby a simple answer but the wording had got me confused, what does this mean:

Shall the act be approved which provides homestead exemption from a Cherokee Co. Ad Valorum for county purposes in an amount equal to the amount by the current year assessed value of a homestead exceeds the base year assessed value of such homestead?

    Thanks

We had our local primary a month ago. There were some judges seats up for grabs, and a county supervisor race that will go to a run-off in November. There were also two propositions, both of which essentially were for the same thing. Both were for eminent domain restrictions, but one tacked on a stupid provision to end rent control in California. It lost. :bergman:

I tried to find an answer to The Commadaunt's question and couldn't.

However, I have to correct myself. It looks like there was, in fact, a Libertarian primary today in Georgia. So while I still think it's inappropriate for taxpayers to fund political parties' nominating processes, at least it isn't impossible for anyone but the big boys to get in on the action.
