In Den's Candlelight Vigil thread, the issue of rep came up.

Would it be possible to make it so that those on your ignore list cannot rep you, and you cannot rep them?

That would seem to fix just about all the problems with rep, and I have a hard time seeing the downside.

If it's possible it sounds like a brilliant idea, although I can see some people abusing it. If it was possible it would need to have a restriction on how often you can switch someone onto/off your ignore list.

    Good point.

Should it be a time limit, or should it have to go through an admin?

Horrible idea. People will just neg rep someone 30 times, then put them on ignore.

    How about this idea:

We leave rep alone and don't cater to rep whiners. If you don't want to play the game, turn it off in your User CP.

Technically it sounds like a good idea, but seriously, why?

Is there some sort of rep war causing a problem?

Just because certain people, including me, neg-rep Den when he makes arrogant remarks that are over the top most times, doesn't mean there is a 'rep war.'

Seems like people need to grow some thicker skin around here.

Miss Bailey's post and mine in response?

What's the point of having the Block User option if it is so easily subverted by rep?

    Gaaaah.

I didn't even think of that.

And I second turning rep off. If you don't care about it, why have it on?

That sounds almost like it was before where if you had your rep switched off you couldn't dish it out

    I have a better idea.

    Leave rep alone.

I'm sympathetic to Ancalagon's idea, but fundamentally, Scorp hits the nail on the head. Don't fix what is only slightly broken, especailly when the fix likely breaks it even further.

How would the fix break it even further.

Seems to keep rep like it is for everyone that wants it, and truly disables it for those that don't.

If you don't like it, disable it.

    Not that hard.

Does it actually disable it? Can you not give rep to someone that has it turned off?

    Sure you can.

But why would it matter? Considering THAT person doesn't care about rep.

The point is that it is a way of getting around the ignore function.

Now I have never used the ignore function but it does make sense that if it is there it should work...

Let's not tear up the board trying to make this idea work. You all will do something and next thing you know we will be moving to a new server.

If your rep is turned off then you shouldn't care. MAN UP for all those loser posters on this board who can't handle the color red. Jeeeezzz.............

Previous attempts at modifying the rep system have caused the board to break down. For that reason, they no longer attempt to modify the rep system unless it's with a VBulletin sanctioned hack.

I haven't turned off rep for awhile, but if you have your rep turned off, aren't both pos reps and neg reps not displayed?

So the only way someone who has rep disabled sees the rep they received is to go into their userCP, turn rep back on, and view the reps they got?

If that's the case, then here's an idea: Don't turn rep back on and check, and your pussy won't get hurt by seeing all the red pips that offend you.

The only way people who have rep disabled know they received rep is to conscientiously turn it back on to check. At that point, you're trying to protect people's feelings from being hurt.

If you turn it off, the only thing that comes up in your UserCP is subscribed threads, no rep text appears.
    I just tried it.

It's the secondary concerns like this that make it infeasible, though the initial suggestion is possible with any of several implementations, I'm severely disinclined to do so.

Because not everyone using the rep system is doing it to be a toolshed. They use it for what it was intended for--to block out annoying posters that they don't want to read text from. I put one poster on ignore for three weeks without saying a word to anyone. Best three weeks I spent here, IMO.

It's just squares, people. If you're a decent enough poster, there will be plenty here ready to doubt and triple the amount of negs you get back. Few people who get more than two red pips within a month do so because the person negging them is just that popular. :jayzus:

In before "Ignore is for pussies!" wank.

    Sorry, I don't see that.

My main problem with rep is that rep wars turn some people off debating and on to rep games instead. If debaters and rep-"warriors" are encouraged to further dissociate by putting each other on ignore, that division will only deepen. Everybody who sometimes makes interesting arguments, but is currently partly distracted by rep wars, will then become completely lost to me and others who are uninterested in rep wars. Which makes WF less interesting.

(I realize that nobody forces me to put anyone on ignore, but if that becomes the recognized solution to rep wars, it will soon become expected behaviour and thus more common.)

The people most interested in actual debate usually aren't "victims' of rep war. They make debates without pulling the holier than thou routine or resorting to personal attacks, and people respect that, even if they disagree. Examples include Async, Paladin, Linda R and 14th Doctor. Even though I have a feeling Den didn't throw the first neg, referring to himself as a god is a level of arrogance that even Garamet never touched and saying shit like that didn't help his case at all.

As it's already been said (and will keep on being said until everyone can understand this point), there aren't any innocent parties in rep wars...none that I've seen thus far.

First, I disagree and challenge anyone to show how Jan Jansen, for instance, chose rep war over debate; and second, I was talking more about perpetrators rather than victims, since it's the perpetrators that we'd be putting on ignore. Scorponok sometimes makes a good point in debate, as does Zombie or Ramen; even Sokar did once, although I forget what year that was.

If there were an existing vBulletin hack that would put an end to these "rep wars", would Wordforge use it?

I'd certainly hope not. I don't participate, but I always get a kick out of people who complain about it! If they leave the board over that, then they probably weren't really here for debate anyways. It's limited to red and gray anyways!

They need to get off their phuqing asses and build the Rep Bomb*.

Can you imagine how exciting that would be? You log on some afternoon and find you've gone from, like 1,500 green to five red pips? And that PosterX, who used to have max green pips now has 3 pips?

Because then you'd get collateral attacks. A poster who would've been untouchable can suddenly be "nuked". But this would leave the attacker open to counterattack by his target's allies.

    It would be beautiful. :bittersweet:

*For the uninitiated, the Rep Bomb would allow you to give more than 30 reps in a 24 hour period. Any reps given that were beyond your daily allotment would be deducted from your rep.

Well, instead of doing it one by one, you could put it on a post saying "Volpone disagrees 100 times: DIE BITCH!" or something :D
