THE GREAT MASA FAILURE! Why do the hard corn tortillas we Americans use to make "tacos" alway break completely in two after the first bite? I say it's a design problem. If we can fake landing a man on the Moon, we can design a better taco shell. We have the technology.
We should switch to soft corn tortillas. MExicans eat it that way... and it taste better. Soft flour tortillias are crap!!
I'll take soft flour anytime. The whole idea of a taco (correct me if I'm wrong) is you can walk around eating it without making a big mess, or needing a plate. So if the taco shell snaps and makes a mess spilling it's contents, what's the point?
Re: THE GREAT MASA FAILURE! I think so too, but it depends on where you buy them, IMO...the kind of soft flour (*low-fat*!?!?!?!) "tortillas" you find at Taco Bell & prepackaged in most grocery stores are crap. But the authentic kind you find at good Mexican restaurants and stores, and are sold door-to-door (usually by kids selling their mom's or grandma's) in the Southwest, are awesome. Made with shortening, and usually soft, stretchy, and so good you can ever eat them with nothing on them. I like the soft Mexican style corn tacos a lot. I don't like the crunchy "Taco Bell" style hard tacos, those are shit. But I do like the "Old California" style deep fried (thin) tacos (or Tacos dorados) many older Mexican places in the Southwest make. However, I have read that this style is becoming less and less common in the US and immigrants from Mexico move in and prefer the authentic soft style they grew up with. Too bad, because I like both kinds.
Mexican singer Thalia wants you to sample her taco! I really don't care how messy it is myself. Discuss!
I haven't had a storebought tortilla either corn or flour in months. Living with a Mexican woman is great!
Re: THE GREAT MASA FAILURE! The "homestyle" tacos that HEB sells are okay for store-bought tortillas, but I only use them as a last resort. Depending on availability, I buy mine from either a restaurant around the corner from my house or from a meat market in the same strip center. I prefer the ones from the meat market because they taste like somebody's abuela made them (you can taste the lard ).
