Its come to my attention that many here on this board do not fully comprehend what it means to live in the southern US from a cultural, economic, or social perspective. To aid those who are lacking in this knowledge I am posting the following, in what will be a series of posts, to provide a bit of an education to those less knowledgeable. Also to foster discussion in a free manner, I am intentionaly placing it in the red room. And thus you can see the passion that permeates every pore of our collegiate athletics programs and how that passion is the thread that ties together the tapestry of what we call southern culture. But lest we forget the academic side of the collegiate life Please, discuss so that you may be enlightened.
Yep that about the SEC football is all right, except #1....I wouldn't take a LV bag of any kind to a stadium. Too expensive. Edit: Just had to add, for those that don't know....football down here is like a religion. And when you're in Alabama, and someone asks you Alabama or Auburn? Don't say that it doesn't matter or you'll be outting yourself as an outsider. It's damned important.
I agree in principle, although there are a few big stadiums in the North as well. Michigan holds over 100,000 and Penn St and OSU are both huge. However, Michigan's stadium is quiet compared to other big bowls and it doesn't look nearly as big as it is. Notre Dame is complete shit.
Bah. What do I care about the farm teams for the NFL? Next you're going to be yammering on about AAA ball or the WNBA or some shit.
Mostly, to understand the South, y'all need a translator. I cain' unnerstan hayf whut mah nayfyoo's wahf say-uz.
I suspek yer nayfyoo's wuna dem der mongoloyds. Actually, the Southerners I can't understand are from Mississippi... they talk 200mph and their lips never touch once.
My dad (and his dad, who ran moonshine, no shit) and his dad were all from the Deep South, and my dad's mom is a Texan. And I've lived in both places for a time. And I don't try to understand them. Especially my fellow Texicans. (And in Texas, btw, football is the fucking state religion.) I just don't try to understand anymore. That way madness lies...
Makes even a far-north Yankee like me (half old-line Michigander Yankee, one-quarter Canadian immigrant and one-quarter Swedish immigrant--you can't get much more "northern" than that!) want to be a Southerner!
And you will be quiet while the prayer is said... You don't have to pray but you will have some respect for other people's beliefs.
The only acceptable excuses for not singing are: A) You're mute B) You're already hammered, thus screwing up the harmony.
God, isn't that the truth. There's just something about waking up on a crisp, cool Autumn morning, stumbling downstairs for the first cigarette of the day, finding 20 alums and a half floated keg (from that morning - the 2 from last night were gone hours before), being handed a cup of Shiner Bock for breakfast, and stepping outside to see your family: the sea of students, alums, and fans who cheer and scream when you emerge - because it's one more voice cheering for the good guys. No kidding. All the women I know who attend the games leave the niceties at the RV/vehicle. Game time is serious time. Not a fashion show. Or C) You're in uniform. And every SEC game will have at least one person in uniform there.
I went to a Big Ten school and didn't go to a single football game. I love football, but I could never bring myself to care. Plus Saturdays in the fall were always a good time to run errands around town. I guess I was spoiled growing up with the Bears. Except for the Death Spiral Dave years. *shudder*
