Could there possibly be a better symbol for this kind of mushy-headedness than sitting around in the darkness for an hour?
Turned on my lights, ran my hot water and took a huge dump. When I was done I flushed the toilet 3 times.
Earth Hour is an insult. I finished 3 concrete foundations for 3 megawatt windmills on the same day they had this ridiculous 'earth hour.' So, who was making a bigger difference?
A better question is: could there be jillions of them? Heart Disease Awareness Month Asian American Awareness Month International Listening Awareness Month Math Awareness Month Alcohol Awareness Month Sexual Assault Awareness Month Latino Health Awareness Month National Trauma Awareness Month Solar Awareness Month Menopause Awareness Month Pain Awareness Month National Breast Cancer Awareness Month AIDS Awareness Month The correct answer, of course, is "no, because I am aware of math--so amazingly aware, in fact, that I know there is no such number as 'jillion'." In entirely unrelated news, I now have a new hero. Or rather, three of them. Whatever.
Exactly. You did something to help improve the environment that will have a long lasting effect and at the same time generate benefit for society. I swear, they spent more energy covering the Earth hour than actually saving for Earth hour. It's incredible. I mean, I believe in responsibility with the environment. Plant and reseed where you uproot, remove as many chemicals from smoke before it enters the atmosphere. Don't turn on every light in the house if you're not going to need it. Things like that. Simple things. We don't need to turn off everyone's lights for an hour. It serves no real purpose beyond a psychological salve that does nothing else but make people say "ha! I did something for the earth". Yeah, sure you did. J.
Shit like Earth Hour just encourages the "You have to go without to be environmentally conscious" line of thought that is so utterly and completely wrong.
Doesn't it take more energy to power all your stuff back on after an hour than it would be to run it for an hour?
While I agree that Earth Hour is an ineffective, useless way for people to pat themselves on the back without making a difference, I have to wonder about people who feel the compulsion to respond to it by intentionally wasting as much as possible.
Meh. I think it would take a lot more than individual consumer's turning off their lights. Huge buildings, factories, etc, etc would have to kill power for an hour, and then turn it back on at the same time. I heard in Vancouver they doused the lights on one of the bridges. Yeah, way to go. Put a bunch of innocent people at harm's risk.
Thats what you get for proposing such a moronic plan. I protested by turning on every major appliance in my house, had all my computers going, all my TVs, had the lights all on.....and I went out for some drinks. I build windmills for a living, and Earth Hour proponents can take their 'message' and shove it up Al Gore's ass.
But why? I mean, sure, Earth Hour is useless and will do nothing to actually conserve resources. But why does its mere existence, coupled with the fact that a lot of people are doing something ineffective and congratulating themselves for it, make people want to waste resources? Is it just contrarianism?
It's not so much wasting resources, as spending them to discourage idiocy. People start congratulating themselves over nothing, they're going to think that more of it can only be better. And then it's a short road to start enforcing it as well.
Mostly it's the compulsion to go against an overwhelming flow. Since there's such a hard push from some people for whatever cause, the reaction from other people is to push hard in the opposite direction.
No seriously. Sometimes its fun to go back and forth with you, other times i just shake my head and wonder.
I turned my tv on, lights on, and my PC. Earth Hour is bullshit. Funny thing, I told folks that on another message board and one of them became really pissy because I told everyone that it was pure stupidity to just turn power off for an hour instead of funding tech that will help curtail wasted energy. They should do as Azure has done, or plant trees, or recycle, or find better tech so there is little to no energy waste instead of this idiot bullshit. lol... -Tibbetts
Okay, let's look at light pollution. Now, this isn't "just the cost of society", it's assholes using lights that are waaay to bright, who point their flood lights at the sky because they think it looks nice, or some other easily solved problem that nobody wants to take the ten seconds to fix. This affects the whole sky, not just for people on their property. It's like dumping in a river, it affects us all.
These fuckers are huge..... Making a difference? Fuck Earth Hour. I was part of the construction of almost all of those fuckers. This is making a REAL difference.
Not really. We have blinking lights on them for the airplanes. We're not allowed to put anything else on them. It already looks like a runway if you see it from the air at night.
