Over 1600 Tea Parties scheduled for April 15 So it appears this populist movement is growing. I was wondering if 1) any one here has been to one yet (and what they're like, etc) and 2) if anyone is planning on going to one in the future. Think I might check out the one in my town... Here's a list of where they're being held on April 15, 2009 in case you're looking for the one in your town. EDIT: btw, I messed up the thread title a bit. Can one of the admins/mods change the title of this thread to "Over 1600 Tea Parties scheduled for April 15" ? Thank you. Yep....I'm researching them, and will likely attend the Columbia S.C. ones (the nearest city to me) that will also occur before/after 15 April.
The only way it would make a dent in the minds of those mind numbed fuckers in Congress would be if all the protesters stormed Washington and slaughtered every politician in sight. They're beyond caring what we think.
Hey, there's one in my town on the 15th....no excuse now not to go! Of course the cool celebrities (like Neil Boortz) will be at the Columbia SC rally the same night. Maybe as they zip down I-20 from Hotlanta to Columbia, they will stop in Disgusta.....who knows? It only makes sense.
Am I going to make a meaningless gesture to convince myself that I'm actually making a difference? No.
Exactly. Pitchforks and guillotines. It's the only way. Even Thomas Jefferson would agree with me. He wouldn't agree with what I'd put in its place, but he'd agree our government is more corrupt and unfair than the British Parliament of the 1770s.
You're right. He was just horny who couldn't keep his hands off his slaves. But he was right when he said that democracies would require constant revolutions. I believe he was the one who said we should have one every ten years. Then again, what's the use. You can't make a flawed form of government function.
Meh. The difference should be made on election day.....problem is the majority of Americans are too fucking stupid to care.
I disagree. The government functions. It's not perfect by any means, but it does the absolute basics and performs them consistently. I think the major issues of our government is that people are becoming more apathetic and less aware of what goes on in Congress. When we don't watch, when we're not vigilant, our government will try to get away with something that isn't above board, or is questionably ethical. In Jefferson's day, we were watching. Our congressmen were people we knew, people who had lived next door to us. Now, many of our representatives (but certainly not all) have become out of touch with who they're representing. They dropped the real for the ideal, and it works against us as a nation. Personally, I do not believe these tea parties will solve anything, neither will they raise a message, at least, not the message intended. I see the tea parties like I saw the PUMA rallies. Lots of yelling and fist waving, but little effectively accomplished. We'll see, of course, how it pans out, and I could be wrong, but I suspect this will happen: Those who participated in the tea parties will believe they struck a blow for their country and the ideas they believe should represent it. They will also most likely believe the MSM is so scared as not to publicize it, thus resulting in an inferred victory. Those who believe it was ineffective will simply be written off as people who want to stay blind or cover their ears to what's happening. Overall, I do not believe it will have a lasting effect, or even one for the history books. The original tea party, in my opinion, had a real, true, strong purpose. These tea parties? Pale comparisons at best, poor comparisons at worst. Just my own opinion on that. J.
Isn't it time for someone to point out that the U.S. is not a democracy? Or should I just ask what form of government you wouldn't consider flawed?
Democracy is an umbrella term for any system that derives power from the masses. The Unites States still meets that qualifier.
Granted. It's just whenever there's a Republican in office, people are always screaming "It's not a democracy! It's a republic!" I guess when it's a Democrat, it's the other way around. I'm more interested in how Beck would structure a perfect government out of a flawed humanity.
I am not going to any protester circle jerk. When people are ready to take action then I will join. Its time for the night of the long knives, anything less is useless. We are to the point with our houses of congress and executive branch and judges that it puts me in mind of the english when they took the kings head (Charles) and left Parliament in control of the country and it got so corrupt that Cromwell ruled as dictator more or less until his time came and then they put another king in charge (charles son) because a king was the lesser of two evils. I think we need change, not more tax and spend from a congress that gets free health care, a pension for life, and automatic raises, when the people are barely making it.
Absolute Totalitarianism. The Philosopher King caste system with the use of eugenics advocated by Plato was the only theory of government that could possibly keep this pitiful species of ours from destroying itself.
Oh it functions alright. It shits on you just fine with no regard for the advancement of national greatness every day.
I think I'll go to one just to see if there are any lonely conservative housewives to hit on. Other than that, I would have no interest in going to what equals a "political tupperware party"
Why don't that shit become a third political party. The TEA party. I think it would get some votes. Ron Paul should get involved.
That 1600 such instances were organized was pretty interesting I thought. In any case, I will probably go for five minutes, and then leave once I'm sufficiently bored....much like the antiwar protests I've been to.
I'm sort of torn. On the one hand, I'd like to go and I'll be home on tax day. On the other, I've never been much of the sign-carrying-idiot-protester type, and that's what I'd feel like going to something like this. Unless we're marching on the capital with ropes bound up in nooses, why bother? Nothing's gonna change. Looking at some Idaho sites, there are a lot of people planning to open carry their sidearms at the protest as well. In Idaho that's perfectly legal. I understand their point and such but the last thing I want to do is be in a press of jostling strangers, flagging a goddamn weapon. That just doesn't seem very bright.
Also, I should note that the Boston Tea Party wasn't a protest about taxation per se, but the government-mandated monopoly on tea. Ironically, this was actually a good thing for the majority of the colonies, because it lowered the cost of the popular drink and was of higher quality than the usual smuggler's ware. Not to mention the fact that this worsened relations with the mother country and precipitated war with Parliament and the King. I should note that the act was repealed and Parliament forbade themselves from collecting taxes and duties from the colonies in 1778, but by then, both parties were dead set on conflict instead of conciliation.
