Bah, if they are going to keep Number 5's look the same then I would much rather that they make a sequel to the original movies. Plenty of ways of reintroducing the character for a new audience, and lots of opportunity for humor with Johnny being outdated technology.

It isn't like he's busy or anything.

Yeah, it ought to be a sequel.

But then again, in the second movie Number Johnny Five had removed his laser gun. At the end of that one he was gold-plated and being sworn in as a citizen.

Just make it a drama about Johnny 5 trying to decide on who to vote for.

Hell, Johnny would have been better in Swing Vote than Costner. He'd get the laughs.
