Unlike the Soviets, however, the Chinese are getting trillions of dollars from the rest of the world. The Soviets were essentially locked into a small economy for much of their history as the rest of the world didn't trade with them to a significant degree.

The protests in China are tied primarily to local issues, such as people being displaced from their homes for a new factory/power plant/dam/etc. being built. There hasn't been a real national interest tying the protests together since Tianamen Square. The Chinese also take a long view of history. One of their civil wars lasted over 100 years. They have 3,500 years of a national identity to look back upon, and periods of disorder are considered "natural."

As for the environment being shitty, that's only going to get worse, even if they do adopt laws more restrictive than we presently have (and some of their laws are).

Aside from what some of the others have said, China is also taking steps to move in the right direction in terms of stockpiling commodities rather than fiat money, and they have an industrial base that we no longer have in this country. In China, India, and these other places they can still make stuff. In point of fact they are making all the stuff that used to be made in America. In America we don't make anything anymore- we have a population of people with Masters Degrees in the Arts with minors in Cinematography and a focus on computer graphics. The only way we're going to get our industrial base back at this point is as someone else's bitches.

The tinfoil hat people would have you believe that we've deliberately and maliciously been divested of our industrial base over the past forty years, but I don't think that's true. I think people are looking for a convenient scapegoat to hide from an uncomfortable truth: The Laws of Economics are inviolable and through apathy, incompetence, mismanagement, and ignorance we've let our industrial base slip away while other countries have picked it up. There is no way of getting it back short of destroying the American middle class completely- something which we are well on the way to doing.

If it survives as one cohesive nation (which I have my doubts on), the America our children and grandchildren inherit will not resemble the one we grew up in in any significant way.

We need a military dictatorship in this country. Fuck the constitution, hell, they've already put it through a paper shredder a couple times already.

Personally, it looks like he was in agreement with her, which is only evidence of what everyone already knew; they're nuttier than peanut brittle.

Here...you really have to be crazy to set off Beck's crazy alarm.

You can actually see the moment it happens, at 1:54 in, after which he gives her the bum's rush.

Okay, I watched that and I didn't see anything crazy or loony in it, or in the way she spoke. Everything she said was true, and the 'bum's rush' she got is the same one everyone gets on every network when they run up against a commercial break. :wtf:

I think some people are grasping at straws here, and pretty thin ones at that.

Maybe. I thought the face he made at 1:54 spoke volumes, but maybe that's just me. I don't care to know any more about Glenn Beck than I already do.

At any rate, obviously conservatives rebelling against the census only hurts them electorally.

It looks like she's planning on making a run for the governorship. That should be interesting. The demographics of her congressional district and the state as a whole are quite different.

She doesn't trust the government collecting all the information it can on every one of its citizens by threat of fines and imprisonment?

What a fucking moonbat! Fill it out and send it in, whore!

Speaking of Minnesota, what is taking the Supreme Court there so long to render a decision on the Senate case? Didn't they hear the case almost a month ago?

The funny thing is that, in the midst of all that paranoid ranting, she advocates putting a citizenship question on the form as a means of determining who is and isn't in the country legally. (As if anyone would check "no.") So in fact, she's perfectly OK with the idea of using the census as an extension of the police, as long as it's to further things she agrees with.

I doubt they'd check no, they'd just leave that question blank, like so many conservatives plan to do with other questions.

And lest some people try to equate leaving that question blank with admission that you in fact aren't a citizen, I suspect liberals would start a grassroots movement calling for all liberals to also leave that question blank in solidarity.

A lot of what has been said in this thread about her does seem to be nutty.

But nothing in that video was nutty.

The fines exist - and it was clearly stated they have never been used.

The historical precedent of passing "emergency" legislation to misuse Census data is there.

And the Census policy of repeated personal contacts in order to verify the info is exactly right.

Other than the sloppy inference that some will get the long form (which does happen but isn't part of the 10 year census) and the questionable (to some) reference to ACORN...

what there was even WRONG, let alone "nutty"?
