Does anyone else get sick of YouTube's lack of volume? YouTube video clips have a much lower volume than the volume played by WinAmp, video games, and even other video sites. This means in order to hear anything worth a damn, you need to turn the volume way up when watching a YouTube video. Then you need to turn it down to listen to anything else, lest you blow out your eardrums when you turn on another application next. I've had that happen to me a few times. Why can't they fix this?? It's really a wonder how a small fix like this could save YouTube annoying the shit out of people, yet they don't.
What irritates me is the inconsistency of volume between clips. Every time I flip between clips, I have to fix the effing volume manually.
The inconsistency of volume between clips is down to the inconsistency of audio gain in the videos as they are submitted. It's not youtube's problem. What annoys me the most about youtube is the vast number of videos that are tilted 90 degrees. People apparently forget that shooting a vidoe and shooting a still picture aren't alike in this respect. You can turn a still picture any way around you want, but with a video it's going to play one way, unless you turn the fuckin screen around.
Youtube can support loud videos perfectly well already, it's all down to the people who upload the videos not setting the volume correctly. If they auto-correct then videos that are meant to be quiet would be too loud.
They should autobalance by default, IMHO. It's such a pain in the ass for the user. I reckon 99.9% of uploaders would never notice, let alone care.
You shouldn't be sick of YouTube. You should be sick of the people uploading videos catering to the lowest common denominator and the near celebration of stupidity in today's culture masked as 'Entertainment'. I've learned a few useful website techniques as well as how to unlock features on devices 'the man' didn't want people to have access to, all through YouTube.
