While my politics are the polar opposite of his, Ted Kennedy did serve his country for many years and I believe that many of his positions were heartfelt. Clearly, he was a very flawed man--the images of boozing, womanizing, and forfeiture of responsibility for Chappaquidick will always adhere to him--but he accomplished a lot in life. He was a worthy adversary. Only his maker, if there is one, can fully weigh Edward Kennedy's life, but I will say this: if after death there isn't another life, he more than paid for all his sins in the way he left this one. Despite all of my conflicts with the man, I wouldn't have wished brain cancer on him.
The current law is ridiculous. Five months for a special election is absurd. It was absurd when passed and it's absurd now. They should ram through a change that at least requires a much more prompt special election. Doing penance for misbehaving under Mitt by denying it's citizens representation in the Senate now is not a sane thing for the Massachusetts legislature to do. They should do the right thing and take the lumps for it that they deserve. It's not about honoring Kennedy; it's about replacing an asinine law so as not to deprive Massachusetts citizens of representation. There will be plenty of actual honors for Kennedy.
One wonders if Ol' Ted has a nice counseling session where he was advised to go ahead and take the pill rather than postpone the inevitable and run up the cost of his care?
Not for his politics, no. But for Mary Jo...gotta admit I'm pretty comfortable with the Karmic Justice going on there.
Oh fuck that. Minnesota hardly suffered in not having two senators for most of the year. In any case, if they were desperate for a vote they could pass a bill allowing the gov to appoint a fill-in Senator who wasn't going to seek the post full time. Even if the dude would just be a puppet voting like Kerry told him to.
That's not even close to what Karmic means. Apparently, to you, anyone who dies (regardless of when or how) has gotten Karmic justice for killing someone previously in their life...
Holy shit, I've walked into Free Republic. Or maybe it's Troll Kingdom. I'm not sure. It certainly looks like both. J.
So my liberal goofball acquaintance who doesn't shut up over at Facebook has " RIP Teddy... may your legacy not be totally shat upon this year." listed as his status. I am sorely tempted to post "What, killing that girl?" But I think I'll just quietly de-friend him.
And this surprises you why? People here have long had a visceral, irrational, and grossly out-of-proportion hatred of Kennedy. That they willingly express it, even after his death, isn't a problem. That they really did see Kennedy as a symbolic or not-so-symbolic epitome of all evil, however, is a problem. There's nothing wrong with their speaking honestly about the dead; there's plenty wrong with their being fucking nuts.
Some people have spoken out with class. I want to make that clear. Then there are those who revel in this man's death and celebrate it. Speaking honestly? Of course. Celebrating a man's death the way some have? Stark raving, and it's political. It's all political. J.
Posting this made me inadvertantly imagine Nancy Pelosi in the swimming pool scene from 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High.' Trust me, I'll find some way to revenge myself upon you for that!
And the fitting hell for you will be the inevitable Kennedy Healthcare Reform Act that they're already discussing...
I've seen considerably worse. There's quite a bit more restraint in this thread, overall, than the man deserves on the merits.
Well, offering to conspire with the Soviets against the president of the United States in the '80s is a really good start. I wouldn't use the word EVIL, but very very VERY wrong and bad for his country.
In the middle of his term, Jimmy Carter wanted to establish a $5000 max out of pocket catastrophic insurance policy by the government to cover every American. In other words you could lose no more than 5k before the government stepped in to pick up the bill. This would keep people from losing their homes, etc from a serious illness. At the time the cost would have been very small and the insurance companies could not charge much for premiums or people would just do without and take the risk of losing 5k. I thought it was a great safety net the cost was not bad, but the main one who opposed it and got the idea killed, Ted Kennedy. Just so ya know.
Restraint, Nova? I honestly hope this is not what is considered "restraint" on Wordforge, when somebody dies. J.
I am saddened to hear of his death and my heartfelt sympathies and condolences go out to his family and friends. That said, I'm glad he won't be in the Senate anymore.
LOL from another forum It Took you 5 days but you did do what I asked, thank you very much. See... he listens to the American public.
