Found on Drudge: "President Obama's Address to Students Across America" on Sept 8th.

This is just fucking scary. I don't think I'd want my kids in that classroom until I know what he's going to say.

And if your kids must go, I'd make sure they know they're NOT to answer any questions the teacher might ask about their home or family.

God, this gives me the willies.:bergman:

What is wrong with the President speaking to students? I heard some of the *non-thinking conservatives in my office today talking about not letting their kids go to school that day so they wouldn't hear the Obama speech.

*These are the kind that just repeat what they heard from Hannity or Rush but can't form any kind of argument whatsoever on their own. So you throw them a slight curveball during a debate and they just talk louder, get remotely racist, or start mumbling about birth certificates. I consider myself to be a pretty conservative person in certain areas and it embarrasses me that these people claim to agree with me.

Only real complaint I have hear is more structural-

why not release the text in advance?
Is this the best use of a school day?
what about the study guide questions the teachers have been given to use?

On the surface, I don't have any problem with the CONCEPT, but Dear Leader has shown to be less than trustworthy and so I think a pre-release of the content of the speech is appropriate.

Whether I was for the man or against the man, I would not want my children listening to a speech without ME there; not an adult, ME.
Yeah, yeah, I'll be "indoctrinating" the kid into my way of thinking, but I think I'd be more - or maybe less - likely to judge and condemn my own if the views they had were not shared by the instructor in the class.

Like how a Republican congress and President had so much free time after solving every problem they came up with the Defense of Marriage Act? Not saying you in particular, but there are so many other things to get indignant about, and this isn't one of them.

You mean how the Defense of Marriage Act was signed into law by Mr. William Jefferson Clinton, the 42nd President of the United States of America? Or, how President Obama's Justice Department issued a brief on June 12th, 2009 supporting the Constitutionality of said act, indicating a sharp reversal of Obama's stance during the campaign.

Now, it's a bad piece of legislation. However, to pin that one only on the Republicans is misguided at best, hypocritically naive at worst. Fair's fair.

Oh, not at all. Manipulating the kiddes to have a leftward influence on their parents is right out of the Democratic playbook - it's a win not only in the future but in some cases in the present.

Don't underestimate the influence on certain of the sheeple that comes from thewir kids coming home and saying "my teacher said..."

I have absolutely no problem with the President, or any other elected official, addressing students. Showing an interest in the next generation is a good thing, and a worthy use of any politico's time.

What I do have a problem with are the various reports floating around that the White House has presented teachers with proposed lesson plans to "supplement" this speech. If these plans involve learning about, for example, the various branches of government, the electoral process, etc., I have no problem.

However, I've seen reports, which I take with a grain of salt at this point, that the plans involve activities such as the students writing letters about how they can "help" Obama, or reading books about Obama. If this is the case, its blatant indoctronation and needs to be stopped cold.

Kids need to learn about government. Schools and government have a role in the education. I will not, however, tolerate any school or any politician "educating" my child to think or believe a certain "correct" way, be it left, right, center, north, south, whatever.

I don't think John was talking about the piece of legislation itself, just the fact that Bush and Congress took the time to deal with it - lots of time.

President Bush spoke to kids about the dangers of drug use. Why is wrong with President Obama speaking to kids about staying in school and getting an education? The whargghbargl from the right is really irritating sometimes recently.

No evidence, but when dealing with politicians I always suspect something underhanded. ALWAYS.

In this case, I'd say the danger lies in children not being equipped with the critical reasoning skills necessary to recognize manipulation and propaganda.

In a perfect world, Obama would let people know what he is going to say to these children, an outline or whatever, and then parents could make their choice on whether or not they'd want their kids to be a part of it. Unfortuantely this isn't a perfect world, nor is this a perfect president.

I'd be fine with him speaking about education and staying in school, an anti drug message - it's good to have the man who represents the highest office in the country speaking to impressionable kids about that sort of thing. Anything beyond that and political, well, let's just say my kid would be having a sick day.

Your kids listen to speeches without you all the time. You know they study speeches given by politicians in school without you present, right? History class isn't just ancient history. We discussed current events all the time in Junior High and High School.

The only people who think this is a problem are those guilty of massive projection, who would, if they were President and addressing the nation's youth, be complete and monumental assholes and can't imagine anyone doing otherwise. Obama's a pathetic fuck, but he's no cpurick.

Seriously, can someone get Obama some sane opposition? Please? 'Cause eight years of this nonsense and were going to be so far up shit's creek that we're irretrievably stuck up the ass.
