I hate "Le Marseillaise." It symbolizes regicide, mass homicide, and Robespierre's reign of horror. The French should be ashamed as using it as their anthem, ESPECIALLY considering what the revolutionaries did at the royal necropolis. Utterly disgusting- there's no other word for it. Attacking your own is regicide, the worst form of treason, especially when committed against a divinely appointed sovereign. Attacking enemies and foreign civilians who happen to get in the way is just...war. I don't know of one war in history where there wasn't a civilian who didn't get killed.

I can't stand the English anthem. The Welsh and Scots have far, far better anthems. The only good thing about GSTQ is that it's very short. Hate long anthems. Waiting around for the game to begin because the fucking anthem hasn't finished is one of the most frustrating parts of watching international footie!

I think every version of the National Anthem that I've really liked has been sung by an entire choir rather than a soloist. (Or a nonvocal version performed by a band, like this one.)

Makes me wonder if the song just isn't well suited to solo vocal performance.

I mean, considering how many times the Russkies rewrote the words to keep up with changes in their government, I'm sure we could come up with some appropriate English lyrics.

No, a GOOD soloist can sing it - but they have to be classically trained and know how to project their voice without screaming, and not take off on their own rendition.
