They did. However the best materials in the world can't stop nature from breaking said materials down if you don't put maintenance into it. Damn straight it would..... I'm just too good for any defense..... You'd need a concrete fence around the whole property. At least 12 feet high and 3 feet wide. Also need a super heavy duty solid metal gate. Oh and no stupid people who would open the gate at the wrong time. I'd buy a silo if I could. Even if it's not the regular house it could be a fallback (especially since I live in South Florida). If it comes with enough land around it you could go hunting too. Certainly cheaper then building a shelter.
Oh and the article is slightly wrong. No amount of springs is going to save you from a direct hit from a nuke. It saves you from near misses.
When I think post-apocalyptic or survivalist, I never think zombie. It's always alien invasion or post nuke.
Your own private Fallout Vault Dwelling!! I would buy one of these in an INSTANT if I had the cash and turn it into my personal stronghold. I would also be inclined to build a real stone castle around the house just for shits and grins. Fill it with an all (hot) female staff in silvery Valkyrie outfits and you have...Valhalla on Earth!!
