Here is the real rub, we pay all this from our incomes and its not enough, they want more because they spend more and more and we get little or nothing to show for that money. What do we the working class get in return for all that tax money? Military/defense is about the only thing I can think of. It is depressing as hell.

Net is about 78% of gross - includes 9% taxes, 6% social security (I think - 1% unemployment insurance, 5% for the elderly and the handicapped) and then the rest goes into my health insurance (employer pays about 40%, the rest is directly deducted from my paycheck, all of it goes into my gross salary) and pension plan. Taxes will go up to 12% with the new and improved salary the coming year.

And you won't be paying whatever debts the Millennials rack up, so what's your point?

Your economic view assumes a static universe, or at least one in which nothing ever changes except to get worse. "Best Damn Country in the World[tm]," right?

Only if you're suggesting that the debts accumulated from 2007-2010 are the last debts that will ever accrue in The Best Damn Country in the World[tm].

Still, it's been nice engaging in an actual dialogue with you for a change. I expect that won't continue past this point.

Hardly, my lifestyle is expensive as fuck. On average I spend almost 3k a month on school fees, 1.5k on my portion of the rent (about 500 more for utilities etc), and the remainder gets split between random stuff like food and medical costs with the occasional bout of traveling. Fuck the government. :(

Everyone talks about how much Canadians are taxed.

However, I just did some quick calculations and found that I get to keep roughly 67% of my income every month. And not all of that goes to taxes because some goes to a defined benefit plan and charitable donations.

Seems pretty close to a lot of what you Americans are getting nailed for, and I get "free" healthcare and a bunch of other wacky stuff that the Canuck system pays for. :eh:

Excluding sales and excise taxes on the things I buy, ~71%, having reduced my probable refund to near-0.

I have two jobs, one of which is pretty hard to calculate anything meaningful for because it's part time and varies widely from season to season. But for my primary job, which is salaried at the same amount week to week, the breakdown is:

    Net take-home: 75.3% of gross.

    Federal income tax: 7.7%
    Social Security: 5.8%
    Medicare: 1.4%
    State income tax: 3.2%

    Health insurance: 4.5%
    Dental and vision: 1.2%

401(k): 1% (yes, I know that should be a lot higher, but I'm paying off some debts that have higher interest rates than the average annual gain in the stock market, so it seemed like a good idea to get rid of those first).

So taxes take up about 18%, insurance premiums and pre-tax savings deductions take up about 7%, and I take home 75%.

Paycheck Net is ~67% of Gross, but that includes not only taxes but medical/dental/vision/LTD insurance plus a pre-tax 6% 401(k) deduction, plus my pre-tax parking fees.

Tuttle got it with #2. Gross income of $35,000 (for that job). Before I started supplementing it, I usually ended up being pretty close to even at filing time, so I figure the withholding rate is pretty close to actual.

Not enough. Never enough. But this is just about all the time and effort I'm willing to devote just to making money, so here we are...
