linkage I know, I know. I really shouldn't post the whole thing but I thought there was a lot of good points made here. I've only been to Hooters (maybe) once in my life so it's not like I'm a huge defender but working there and eating there is a legal choice that people make. If there were religious groups protesting, they'd be called prudes and told to not force their morals on anyone else. Somehow, though, because NOW might want to say it's a bad choice, it's OK. Isn't NOW forcing their morals on other people in the same way? btw, this lady's working on her own website. Kinda skimpy (so to speak) right now but I expect she'll make some money off it as well. NOW sounds a lot like they're justifying their own existence by complaining about something that's not really a problem.
That is because they don't want their kids going "Mommy, why cant you be pretty like our waitress and make damned good money off of the tips instead of being so ugly I had to be the result of artificial insemination and we live in a shitty apartment?" You can't? I remember bringing sapper there for the first time when he was 4 or so. Yeah he loved the attention and being my kid, loved the bewbies on display.
Hooters is not an adult entertainment establishment. I mean come on, everyone goes to hooters for wings!
(Don't know her, but) she seems a perfect example of everything the feminist movement wanted. A smart, motivated woman who made a decision to take care of herself. She also seems a great example of someone with some entrepreneurial spirit. I think what you really mean here is that she overcame a lot of her *real* problems and is making a success of herself.
Wasn't talking about her; I mean NOW. And even in the case of NOW, I'm wondering whether this is something they polled the membership on or just some decision by the upper echelons. You've described her accurately. She's wholesome. And she's serving wings, not lap dances. What I'm objecting to is the silliness factor. Never mind pay and child care inequities in this country, never mind the serious oppression of women in Saudi and elsewhere, never mind FGM, let's grab some headlines by denouncing someone who's just trying to earn an honest day's pay. Drives me nuts...
Thanks for clarifying that. I couldn't tell whether you just wanted to have an argument there. THOSE issues are another thread.
True. But it's as if my generation of feminists paved the way for a generation of whiny little bitches who want the same salaries as the menfolk, plus unlimited maternity leave, and still expect the guy to hold the door and pick up the restaurant tab. Much less make minor plumbing repairs and take out the trash. Make up your minds, ladies. There's no such thing as being "more equal."
Why is this "news"? Seriously, she's not the first pretty girl to cash in on her looks. She's not the first one who had someone in her life who didn't understand it. It seems like the same ol' same ol' with regard to the prudish types who are against it, and I don't even see any type of organized protest or anything...!? So...what...? It must've been a slow news day and TPTB wanted to put a picture of a pretty lady on display.
Prudish? I think I'm the only one to mention the prudes... Besides, news isn't always just about the latest murder or war story. Heaven knows we get a "certain perspective" from NPR on things that aren't what you would call news. One could actually consider this Fox really being "fair and balanced" from that angle.
One of my all-time favorite reporters to work with (and not just because she's a babe ) put herself through school working at a Hooters. Until she got out of the business, she was a damn good reporter and a real bulldog when it came to investigative reporting. She's only about 4'5", but woe unto you if you cross her. I remember there was a big stink raised here back in the mid-90s when some NOW-types found out that some of the city council meeting meals were being catered by Hooters. I remember a local DJ, scorching those stuck up bitches on air, saying "You see more skin at the swimming pool or at the beach than you do at any Hooters restaurant!" No response. In 1994(?), the same year that they got all bent about the city council thing, NOW had its national convention here and, as part of the "festivities", they did a protest at the downtown Hooters (which is in a mall). All the media showed up and we went inside with them as they chanted and waved their signs. We all got thrown out by mall security because the mall is private property. It was glorious. All of those homely, bitter women yelling and screaming at the Hooters girls and at the mall rent-a-cops. Some of them had to be physically removed from the premises. Makes me laugh just remembering it.
