As older brother to MAN-AT-ARMS, FISTOR holds a high rank amongst the Masters of the Universe. It is the equivelent to 23 star battle general in your "human" army.

In the USA you could go from enlisted directly to commissioned officer status (with some stops along the way for training). If you go from Enlisted to WO, you normally just dont go any further. Find an edition of "Guardians of the Republic" (out of print unfortunately) for a history of the NCO corps of the Army. How does one advance from E to O status? Well there are the rare direct battle field commissions. Then there is the "Green to Gold" program where high speed / low drag soldiers are identified, pulled from their units, and sent to college. Another option is to take an EM, send them to Monmouth Preparatory School in NJ and upon their graduation send them to West Point.* Or if you have what it takes the Army may send you straight to the Point. Finally if you already have your degree, a soldier can go to OCS. Of course you can serve your enlistment, get out, go to college, get your commission and come back in a shiny butter bar.

Why doesn't the Air Force allow for advancement like that? Maybe its because the USAF enlisted for the most part have a pretty damned nice life compared to the other services and the USAF doesnt feel like allowing the riff-raff into the country club level. I say for the most part because AF PJs and CC are pretty damned kick ass.

    * = This is what I was offered but, like a dumbass turned down because at the time I had a nasty racist of a mother fucker of a squad leader who hated white people and I had developed a serious case of FTA. :bang:

It's offered mainly to officers who had been enlisted in the past though it can be offered to those whose career has been entirely commissioned.

Liet made some racist comments about oreos at Anna's expense once. He was soon ridiculed into submission and disappeared for a while over it, that is if I remember correctly.

Actually, he called her an oreo, outright, for not taking the typical position of black people on some issue. She wasn't liberal enough for him. As I remember it, there wasn't one person on the board who defended him.

No, EP was just talking out of his ass.

    Again.

And before he spouts off with "They didn't have that when I was in! :tantrum:", I'm pretty sure all branches of the service have had similar programs for decades.

Well naturally enlisted person didn't know anything about Officer Commissioning programs because he wouldn't have qualified for one in a hundred million years.

I'm pretty sure your full of shit too. They had a couple of show programs where they would allow promotion from enlisted to officer but it was for connected people. Usually had a family member that was high up in the military or something like that. I knew plenty of people that were trying to go to school while they were in but never heard of anybody ever becoming an officer. That path simply did not exist for people who enlisted off the street. Lots of people gave up trying to take classes because of all the bullshit. I hung in their and was determined to get something despite those assholes. Its a god damned game. They pretend to offer all this education shit while you are in, but taking advantage of it is just not realistic. No place or time to study, old NCOs that resent people trying to get an education, etc.

One hopes that if she achieves the rank of Admiral, she will understand that in order to defeat the bug, one must understand the bug.

Because in the future mankind can ill afford another Klendathu.

Hey, its the main reason I got out. I had a line number for E-5 after passing the promotion test and could only see making 2 more grades in the next 15 years. E-6 and E-7 they had tests for. The next two enlisted ranks was pure politics to move into those. I looked at all my options and there really weren't any. The day I processed out, I talked to an Army guy who was offering a chopper pilot program for prior enlisted with associate degrees. It was too late for me because I was out. The was absolutely nothing like that in the Air Force. If there had been something to work for , to "aspire to" I might have stayed in. It was pretty much dead end as far as I could see. If I had to do it again, I would not even bother with all the work that went into going to school for an associate degree that hardly any of the credits would transfer to a 4 year degree and no one recognizes. Its like a big scam. A CCAF degree is only recognized in the Air Force and having it gets you nothing in the Air Force, so its a big circle jerk.
I would never advise anyone to go into the military if they are looking for an education, unless its an education on how much bullshit a recruiter can sling.

There are plenty of people who have gotten AAs and BAs while in the service. It takes a good long while when on a ship (doubly so in Japan, where ships are forward deployed), but it does happen, for those who care enough to do all their research.

And even if one doesn't go to school in the service, every military person has a the choice between the Montgomery or Pot 9/11 GI Bills nowadays. So really, there's no excuse to say you can't get an education.

Even if you have to switch jobs to get an education. For example, if you are a grunt deployed at far outposts for back-to-back deployments, you may have to choose a job with more stability + downtime.

You may even have to switch branches of service - we get a lot of prior service from all branches at the schoolhouse I support.

And with online classes opportunities are even better.

What is the Pot 9/11 GI bill?
For those who say I am full of it and believe the propaganda that there has always been a GI bill.
They matched what you put in 2 to 1 with a max of 2700 you could put in. The problem is that that people couldn't use it because there were all kinds of exclusions and things, like an insurance form. Later they started telling folks they could get their money back if they couldn't use it. Nobody trusted that and you made like $600 before taxes and had like a hundred bucks a week to spend and so you had to contribute a lot of your pay. 2700 got you 9100 max if you put up the money and you used it withing a certain time frame.
People that came in after 1985 got the Montgomery GI bill. They paid in $100 a month for the first year ($1200) and got like $12,000 or more for college. How sweet was that? If I had waited a year to go in the military, I could have had all that, but how are you supposed to know?
I don't really regret for a second, my time in the military, but it always seemed like I was a day late for every kind of benefit that came along. The guys that had been in a few years before me got the full real GI bill. That was the great until the democrats decided to go after the military in the 70s in favor of social programs.

    Post 9/11 GI BIll.

    Main differences:

    1. You get 15 years after separation to use your benefits instead of just 10.
    2. Instead of sending you a check for tuition and whatnot, the Feds directly pay the college, provided that the amount is not more than what would be charged by the most expensive state university in your state.
    3. You get a monthly stipend equal to a married E-5's BAH.

The Post 9/11 GI Bill is light years superior to the old Montgomery GI Bill.
