    Well fucking DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone with a brain said putting a huge fine on delayed aircraft would result in lots more cancellations.

What the fuck do you expect? Do you really expect airlines to run the risk of multimillion dollar fines?

    Idiots.

I generally don't complain too much when it comes to air travel.
I mean 100 years ago if you told someone that someday people could fly across the ocean while sitting in a seat watching TV and drinking a beer they would call you crazy. Just a way to keep things in perspective!

I myself am an Amtrak man when it comes to continental long distance. I prefer my own compartment with private shower and toilet, and not having to worry about the TSA feeling up a skinny white boy's tight ass and wondering if a bomb was stuffed up there. I also make no apologies for using Cunard's QM2 when I need to travel to and from Europe. I've never been a fan of flying, even before 9/11 and the TSA. I've done it, but only when I have to.

You've got to love the conclusion of the Obama worshippers. If you don't like how the man and his TSA are "taking care of us", then use a different mode of transportation.

When it comes to the Obama worshippers, they seem to expect us to sit by quietly and allow him to do whatever the hell he wants. Funny thing is a few years ago, they didn't do that with Bush. In fact we had Hillary Clinton claiming you are being a good American questioning the President. Apparently for our Democrat's, that only applies when it is a Republican being scrutinized.

Airlines make money when their planes are flying, not when they're sitting on the ground. If the delays that prompted the new regulation were avoiable by the airlines, they would've been avoided. Since the airlines want to avoid hefty fines for their planes sitting on the tarmac for extended periods, it's only natural they'll cancel flights. What would YOU do in a similar situation?
Translation: "I blame the airlines for not serving me even when they're put in a position where it is impossible to do so without paying an enormous fine."

You want the government to command problems with a service away? Then you pay the price for unintended consequences, assholes.

Wow, very good. So tell me Margaret, who is in charge of the TSA and for that matter the Department of Homeland Security? Oh yah, that's right, the current President of the United States.

You can attempt to bring up when the TSA started each time we have one of these discussions. But, it is now under a different leader. A leader that has in fact allowed it to go to even greater lengths in how it deals with the taxpayers in this country.

Reminding people of when TSA began does nothing to change who controls it today. Your argument is nothing more than the typical strawman argument that much of your ridiculous life seems to revolve around.

I'm not understanding how the tarmac rule has caused these cancellations. If the airline expects the airplane to be stuck on the tarmac for an extended period of time, why not just have the passengers wait in the terminal for that time? Or if they don't anticipate a delay but encounter one anyway when everyone has boarded, unload passengers from the airplane while they're fixing the problem. Passengers are then able to still have access to food and water and to freely move about while giving the airline time to fix the delay. People would much rather wait around an airport terminal than be confined to a motionless plane. Barring that, the easiest solution is to stop being a shitty airline.

And one of the examples of a cancelled flight was due to a freaking blizzard--that wouldn't have been changed if these tarmac fines weren't in place.

The airlines don't expect the plane to be stuck on the tarmac. They expect the plane to take off on time.

But things happen. Weather and emergencies can park a plane for a while so airlines say, "Hmmmm threat of snowstorm in X? Well cancel all flights going to X"

And they can't let passengers off. Government rules.

The article mentioned problems with crew availability and mechanic problems. Those are typically addressed before passengers even begin boarding.

Again, the cancellation seems to be as a result of weather and not the tarmac rule.

Did not know that. What's the logic behind that? And what are the exceptions to the rule?

^ Airlines often have an issue with gates and needing space for the next flights. If there is a good chance of a long delay they may choose to cancel rather than risk tying up a gate with the delayed plane. Prior to this rule it would be out on the tarmac and not clogging up the needed gate space.

As I said shit happens. You can't always control things. It's far easier to cancel a flight then pay a multi-million dollar fine.

You don't seem to be getting the concept. In the past before this rule came up they would put you on the plane and you'd wait to take off regardless of weather. Now with the rule they just cancel flights in order to avoid the fines.

Did not know that. What's the logic behind that? And what are the exceptions to the rule?[/QUOTE]

They don't want to re-screen passengers and luggage. BS to me but I don't write the rules and AFAIK there are no exceptions.

A central factor is the idea that the corporation, not the customer, is always right.

This is, at heart, the issue with modern capitalism.

    True.
Yeah, I'm not getting the concept which is why I asked. You're making it clearer for me, thank you.

Yeah, that is dumb. Why would passengers even need to be re-screened? They already passed through security.

Do the planes need to literally need to wait in line out on the tarmac or do they just take a number?

As for the tarmac rule, it's trying to fix a legitimate problem, and passengers said they would prefer to have their flight cancelled and rescheduled rather than wait on the tarmac. Speaking from personal experience, I agree with that. In the last two years I've flown around 30,000 miles. I only had one flight cancellation, but it was preferable being put up in a hotel for the night rather than sit on a cramped plane in seats that are too small (I'm 6'5") for hours and then being sent to the hotel anyway. I was lucky enough for this to happen in the EU, where they actually have a good set of rights for passengers.

Granted, there probably are better ways of fixing the tarmac delay problems.

In order to understand what drives these delays, y'all have to understand how the airspace system works, particularly for ATC. I could write a fuckin' essay on it, but I don't have the energy right now after two straight days of dealing with it with only about 9 hours off in between.

Suffice it to say it's waaaaaay more involved than 'just keep 'em in the terminal until its time to load up and go.' Obviously none of you have ever been Number 84 in line to take off at Newark. I have. I shit you not. That was a three and half hour sit before we even got off the ramp, and we don't even take up a gate.

I flew out of Newark today, and most of the fights (including my own) in the terminal were being delayed by half an hour or more. I didn't hear of any cancellations, though.

And then I got to see the Statue of Liberty and Niagara Falls and stuff!

Surely you must admit that air travel now lacks the sense of customer service that it once was famous for.

In fact, it can be argued that airlines now do not care about customer service at all.
