Clapton blows toads from his ass! There, red room safe. Really his early work is much preffered in this camp.
Seems unfair that one song should have two such unforgettable riffs. God, I love that track. Interesting Wiki article on it. The song is very technical: I knew about the Pattie Boyd love triangle, but I didn't know that she was also the inspiration for Wonderful Tonight -- my other favorite Clapton track.
I can't hear the piano part without changing the fucking station. Who in the goddamned hell thought it was a good idea to end it with a fucking six hour piano solo?
Layla is an incredible album. Every track just kills, and their cover of "Little Wing" surpasses the original. It's a shame the band went to shit before they could record another album.
Not even going to ask you what you think of "Inna-gadda-da-vida," much less the Chambers Brothers' "Time"... Then there's the long version of "When the Music's Over..."
I've bought a lot of Doors albums over the years. Probably bought Strange Days two or three times on different formats. When the music's over is creative and interesting, Layla is just droning. Had Iron Butterfly on cassette when I was a kid. No idea why I decided to get that, but I used to listen to it all the time while I played with legos and built model space ships. No Chambers Brothers. Not ever.
Aw, c'mon. It's like the band is having a laugh at your expense. "I know! Let's put an insanely long elevator music piano solo at the end of it! People will feel honor-bound to listen to the whole damn thing to qualify as real fans!"
Stairway is a long song that works IMO. The best part comes toward the end. Drums don't even kick in until a few minutes either.
Love it. It's interesting, creative, resonates with feeling. Love Zeppelin in general, actually. I should really make an effort to buy more CDs... I don't mean to say I hate Layla, though I like Cream more than Derek and the Dominoes. That piano solo just doesn't belong.
This may be heretical to some, but I'd almost say I like the unplugged version better. I dunno, though. I've sang both karaoke and I feel more into the unplugged version.
The unplugged version of "Layla" is one of the many hundreds (if not thousands) of songs on the "I've heard that song enough times to last me the rest of my life" list. They played the shit out of that recording when it was released.
Bow down to Clapton when you hear his version of Freddy King's "I'm Tore Down". http://www.youtube.com/watch
SORRY! Tried the WF/Youtube thing + messed it up. Go to Youtube + search "I'm tore down" by Eric Clapton at Royal Albert Hall......awesome!
