I am including some excerpts from the article regarding the outrageous salaries some of these retired school administrators are making in retirement. To put simply, the states public employee retirement system needs to be destroyed and rebuilt from scratch. The taxpayers cannot afford to pay these types of pensions. Link
Well the US Federal Government isn't much better. Especially considering they seem to be trying to follow California's examples.
Here's my problem - So what? You're an administrator - you make shit loads of money a year. Why are you surprised they get 6 figure pensions? What should they get? None? This is stupidity. Of course the executives get serious cash. Isn't this what you're all about?
I'm not surprised they get six figure incomes. But, in retirement, there is absolutely no justifiable reason to pay them more than what they were making when they were actually working. It is also unsustainable.
Why not? For one simple reason, it is wrong. That is one of the things that needs to be reformed in the public employee pension system. Let those people have the same types of retirements that people in the private sector have.
What's wrong with making money? I don't understand. Executives in the private sector have better pensions and pay rates during employment. Is that what you're proposing?
Those in the private sector are not living off of the taxpayers. While they work, they may receive better salaries, but their retirements and benefits are not necessarily better, nor are they generally for a lifetime. People who choose to work in civil service jobs, need to remember that they are in service to the taxpayers, not vice versa. That is something that at least in my opinion is completely ignored at this point, by the current crop of public employees in education as well as an assortment of other government jobs.
So your solution is crappier public workers? Why would government get better if its leaders are paid shit and have no benefits?
I'm not talking about paying them shit, or no benefits. But, there is absolutely no reason for any of them to make more than their private sector counterparts, or to retire out at more than what their highest earning years were while employed. There is also no reason they shouldn't have similar 401k style retirements that many private sector workers have. For the public employees who believe they would do better in the private sector, I say good luck and let's see them actually do that.
