Not gluttony, celebration. Feasting is something humans do when we celebrate that we have survived a trial. Thanksgiving commemorates our survival of a terrible winter in our fledgling society as a people, and so we give thanks that we have abundance, that we survived. That's not gluttony. The same for Christmas. We celebrate the holiday by feasting. Humans do this for social reasons, though it does extend back to the primal. The human body, when presented with ample food, will consume what it can in an effort to store fat and nutrients to survive another day.

If you were to eat in excess every day, then yes, it would be gluttony. As it stands, though, it is not gluttonous to have a feast once in a while to commemorate something we hold sacred.

Confusing. If Thanksgiving is meant to be a celebration of surviving the harsh winter, then why is it celebrated just before winter begins?

Shouldn't Thanksgiving be, say, March 3rd?

Because you have to plant stuff before you can eat it. Then you have wait for it to grow, then you have to harvest it.

Thanksgiving is a Harvest Festival. Most of the crops have been pulled in and stored for winter, the animals are fat after a summer of eating (unlike in the spring where they are half starved and provide little sustenance) and good for a meal....

Because the modern consumer race is comprised mostly of superfluous beings who use that gluttony fill that vast emptiness in them where a useful purpose in life should be.

Just wondering, but what do you consider your useful purpose in life to be?

Did I somehow give the impression that I was innocent of gluttony?

My purpose is to pay my bills until I die, as far as that goes.

That is the real eternal question of man. No on really knows why we are here but there are plenty of religions to step in and say that we were created by god so we can turn around and worship him. Does that sound like happiness?
I don't know why we exist but the most positive spin I can put on it is that I will play with my toys until I die.

My purpose in life is to fart and emit enough greenhouse gasses to raise the planet's temperature by 0.0013427°.
