A guy I went to high school with recently unfriended me. He and his ignorant skank of a wife couldn't take a worldview that was different from theirs.
I just put several people on the restricted list and bumped a few others up to the close friend or acquaintance list. It's sad but I hate unfriending people... mainly because I don't want to block them (smalltown shit) and two I don't want to re-enter their feed as someone you may know.
I hear ya and sorry you and Tamar have to deal with this. So far I haven't had to do that. I have had folks on the in-laws side of the house unfriend me and to be honest, I felt no great loss other than not having the opportunity to make their heads explode by me just being me.
How do you unfriend someone on facebook and does it tell them "hey so and so just dropped you as a friend!"
me to. I'm not afraid to block someone from my feed but I basically never unfriend anyone (though I've been dropped - but never by anyone i cared to lose AFAIK)

I unfriend a lot of people. It only came up once when my aunt asked at a family party "Why don't I see your statuses anymore?" It got really awkward.
The perfect lie for this is "I suspended my account, I was wasting too much time on it. Suspending it makes me invisible, you see... so that's why you don't see me anymore." But you have to block them to perfect the illusion.
I do a mass purge every year or so. I basically have two criteria: Have we talked either in person or on FB in the last year? If I were in your city would I try and grab a beer with you? If the answer is no to both person is gone.

When being unfriended on FB is an issue, it really is time to switch the PC off, piss off to the pub. Unless you get punched out inside 20 minutes of entering the pub, in which case you're social kryptonite and should become a hermit.
Several WF people has defriended me believe it or not...and I assume it's because they think my WF persona is the real me. Very sad.
