While it isn't a slam dunk by any means (the last numbers I saw had support at 61%, historically you need 63% this early to guarentee passage once the anti-campaign kicks into gear) it's got a good chance. Someone has to be the first to tell the Fed's to Fuck Off, be awesome if it was Washington. I'm also pretty confident that once one state does it, other states will follow along until pretty much the Fed's are required to cede the power over to the states. http://kuow.org/program.php?id=25467 Here's the campaign's website: http://newapproachwa.org/ If you've got a few bucks, donate some to the campaign. The sooner one state breaks free the sooner your's will follow!
As much as it makes sense that this should work, I think that the Fed has too much invested in the "War on Drugs", marijuana in particular, to allow this, if passed, to go unanswered. I can see this provoking some sort of DEA special corps, dispatched to Washington with the purpose of cracking down on buyers and sellers of newly legalized, recreational pot.
Eh, they had a lot invested in prohibition, and it fell down. They had a lot tied up in slavery and that went. I don't buy the fairy tale of the Invincible Fedgov.
Be realistic. We've already seen how the Fed reacted to referendums on medical marijuana. They're going to push back. Count on it.
Why do people insist on asking Washington for permission like a child asking a parent to go to a sleepover? Government should be told (not asked, TOLD) what private citizens consume is none of their damn business. Period. Anything less is validating the soft-tyranny we currently have.
Umm... you do realize that the Seattle Times Editorial Board is saying that Washington State (you know, where Seattle is located) should legalize it next year. Not that Washington D.C. (where the U.S. Capitol is located) should legalize it. Although that will eventually happen once enough states go for it.
Oregon also needs to get moving on this for sure. They are the first state to decriminalize pot. They also had two ballots initiatives to legalize it in the last 2 years. They are about have a third one in 2012. I was just in the Pacific Northwest recently for a professional conference and I visited Portland as a side trip. During my little dusk saunter through the city center, I happened to run into the Occupy crowd in Chapman square. From what I saw there and more generally in the city, I think they are about to do it.
Are you sure about this? Ah, okay. Just looked it up. It seems 'decriminalization' is a broader term than I thought. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabis_in_Oregon#Decriminalization
Is it bad that I'm anti pot just because I find potheads annoying? I just do. Sure they aren't crackheads. But they are annoying.
Yeah, but if you legalized it, thus removed their central topic of discussion, what would they have to be annoying about?
