The time when it was a big fucking adventure. You went on it and never knew where you'd end up. Where you were going to go today, who knows? And always some interesting new thing...

This was around the late 90s up until 2003 or so.

Now mostly people seem to go to youtube, facebook, twitter, and a handful of web boards as a pretty regular thing, and those are the pretty much one-size-fits-all servers-up of stuff. And that's it, for the most part. Certainly I have recognised that I'm guilty of that.

Another thing it's worth mentioning in passing, is the fascinating old horse that is Usenet. I count myself lucky that I caught the tail end of Usenet's existence as a major part of the online experience, from early '99 up through its decline in influence. Apparently today it's mostly just used as a below-radar venue for swapping warez.

All the same information that was on all those geoshitties sites, and usenet groups, and ftp servers is either on one of the big 3 (wiki, youtube, google) or can be gotten to through them.

    It's just been organized.

"Adventure", maybe...but just as much, scrounging for a nugget of info in someone's head out in Bumfuck Indiana via Yahoo was a fuckin' pain in the ass.

I like it easier, that's what computers were made for in the first fucking place.

I remember when a web address was nowhere near as simple as www.nameofsite.com... it involved the server name, the IP numbers, god knows what else, and ended in .index/html.

    Glad that shit's over!!!!

Ah, the '90s internet, with its frames, blink tags, "under construction" animated gifs, and yellow-and-cyan text on "starry sky" backgrounds.

Nope ... don't miss it at all.

I'm all about getting a good CMS and going from there. I use Wordpress personally, although Drupal and Joomla have their loyalists.

Go the whole hog Ricky boy, don't hold back. Why not throw in niggermania.com and chimpout.com, and jewwatch.com as well. You only make yourself a laughing stock with such cheesy shite.

    Pathetic.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled thread...

In high school, I used Netscape Navigator on a PowerMac 5200/75 to surf the internet on the school's T1 line. Of course, the average speed there was about 3.6kbps. Still, I remember the first time I visited a website on a server in Australia. It was just neat to think about.

Then I started looking for porn.
I love you internet. Never change.

Our web designer at work recommended Expression. Maybe some day I'll feel like peeling $100 off and redoing my whole website. Doesn't seem likely, though.

It kills me how much crap web programs add to simple html. Here's the code for one of my model pages, with two halves of a picture on it:

    http://www.inpayne.com/models/bb1.html

Put that thru a web design package and it's three or five times longer with junk code.

I remember my very first Internet search: "hamsters".

It returned four sites and two didn't work.
