This discussion started over in RR in Sandbagger's thread. More appropriate to continue it here. That kind of sums up my opinion of the photo, which is the first photo I've seen from the new film. The hair, the makeup, the fingernails...it's got that typical Tim Burton over-the-top plastic look to it. I had committed myself that this would be the film I go see in the theater this summer...until I saw that photo. Now I'm taking a wait and see attitude. I was a huge fan of the original series and the 1991 short-lived remake wasn't bad. :moonbats:
Anymore, if I see Tim Burton's name attached to a project, I automatically avoid it. It'll look pretty, but that's about it.
I hated when they cancelled the 90's version of Dark Shadows, it was just getting good when it got the axe!!!!!
Interesting to me that that first photo could be Helena Bonham Carter in drag as much as it is Johnny Depp. That said, after Nolan gets done with Batman, if they gave Burton another shot at the franchise with total free rein I'd see it unquestionably. (Although maybe not without reservations if he casts Depp as both the Joker and Batman.)
It was very good. I have most of TOS on VHS and all of the remake on DVD. Ben Cross made a terrific Barnabas. Unfortunately, it got bombed by the Gulf War.
Looks good to me. Jonathan Frid, the original Barnabas Collins, gives Johnny Depp a thumbs up too. I'm eager to see how it plays out on screen.
I hope it's good. As for Frid, he's an old guy who probably needs some money and he does have a cameo in the film.
I dunno. i love the Deppster and he always delivers something interesting. But a baby-faced Barnabas? Just doesn't seem right.
I knew going in that it wasn't going to be perfect. Jonathan Frid is the only real Barnabas, and anyone else who tries is only going to do so well. Nothing I've seen yet is so grossly out of spec. that I am in any way worried. I think the movie is in good hands, and I think Depp will do it justice on the strength of his love for the character.
Frid was to Barnabas what Sean Connery was to James Bond. He established the role and set the standard. I'll give Ben Cross credit where it's due. He did the role justice.
I just couldn't get into the early 90's Dark Shadows revival. Ben Cross never quite "did it" for me. That said, it wasn't HIS fault, he did his best. I just wasn't feeling it.
Was never a fan of the original series, and Tim Burton is played the fuck out, but I'll watch it if Helena Bonham Carter acts crazy and gets naked. Then again, I could just rewatch Fight Club for that...
DS-TOS is one of my fondest childhood TV memories. Right up there with ST-TOS. I made it a point to be home from school every day by 4PM to watch it.
What's odd is that Jonathan Frid (original Barnabas) and David Selby (original Quentin Collins) have bit parts in it and apparently gave it their seal of approval.
Wow. I had no idea it was possible to make something that bad. Not only do I not want to see that, I'm going to have to seriously reevaluate any friendships I might have with folks who go to see it.
I've never seen the original show, but it doesn't look that bad. But maybe I'm just trying to be positive, as with Johnny Depp AND Vampires, I'll be there opening night most likely.
